Game Report - West Chester 62 - Edinboro 28

Hey Golden Ram football fans, how do you like your team to score? Do you like one of those long, clock consuming drives that goes the length of the field and maybe includes a fourth down conversion? Or would you rather a quick strike pass into the end zone. Or maybe you’re defensive minded and enjoy a defender taking an interception to the house? Or are you a special teams fan, maybe a blocked punt that gets returned for a score? Well West Chester did all of those and more in just the 20 minutes of the game en route to a 62-28 win over visiting Edinboro.

The Golden Rams shot out to a 34-0 lead early in the second quarter. And the lead never shrunk below 27 points which made the mistakes easy to overlook. Some issues were due to personnel changes, but a long Edinboro kick-off return led to an easy score for the Fighting Scots and a fumble led to another score.

The Golden Ram defense substituted liberally, partially due to the sweltering conditions and partially due to the lopsided score. With Edinboro’s offensive starters never coming out of the game, they gained almost 70% of their yards after halftime.

Linebacker Tyler Morrissey led the West Chester defense with six tackles, while Jarey Elder, Zack Hockman, and Shaquille James each had five stops. Linebacker Kevin Duggan had the pick six after Shane Griffin deflected the pass. Diquan Gilbert and Omar Peterkin each got their first sack as a Golden Ram and Jordan Burney had three pass breakups. True freshman Nate Barnes saw his first collegiate action on special teams and in the secondary and was credited with two solo stops in the game.

On special teams, Justice Smith scored a touchdown after recovering the punt blocked by Mike Class. George Lambritsios converted six PAT’s while Andrew Chegia knocked two through and Brendan Paulison averaged 46 yards per punt.

The offense was paced by Jarel Elder who had 85 yards and two touchdowns rushing, 67 yards and a score receiving, and a 15-yard kickoff return. Quarterback Paul Dooley connected on 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Although he was intercepted twice, one of them came on a Hail Mary to end the first half. Tyler Karpinski had four catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns while redshirt freshman Rasheem James had four catches for 50 yards and a score.

Probably the biggest concern on Saturday was that right tackle Vince Lostracco did not dress and left tackle Evyn Stadulis left the game late in the first half with an apparent injury. If you include left guard Tyler Drob who has yet to dress this season, that’s three seniors that were missing from this offensive line.
