Game Preview - Bloomsburg

The #15 Golden Rams (11-1) travel to take on the #11 Bloomsburg Huskies (10-1) on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The winner will play the winner of the #6 Shepherd - #9 Winston-Salem St game next Saturday for the Super Region 1 Championship.

Series History:

West Chester leads the overall series 46-25 and, as was reported earlier this month, these two teams always seem to have classic battles on big stages. This will be the third time that the two teams will meet in the playoffs with Bloomsburg holding a 2-0 advantage. In 2006, the Huskies held on to win 21-20 and in 2008 Bloomsburg prevailed 28-21. Like this year, both of those contests were in Bloomsburg.

Last Meeting:

11/09/2013 Bloomsburg 31 - West Chester 28

It was just three weeks ago that these two long time division rivals faced each other at packed Farrell Stadium with the outright division title and a trip to the PSAC championship at stake. Despite the final margin of just three points, Bloomsburg dominated the game and held a 15 minute advantage in time of possession.

West Chester was unable to stop the Huskies' potent rushing offense that gained over 300 yards. But Bloomsburg uncharacteristically threw the ball for over 250 yards to roll up 572 yards of total offense in the game. The Golden Rams used their big play offense to score on passing plays of 51, 33, 71 and 18 yards.

Scouting the Opponent:
Bloomsburg's offense is almost 2:1 in favor of its running game. Franklyn Quiteh (237 carries, 1,987 yards, 27 TD's) was the PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year and is a Harlon Hill finalist for the second consecutive year. Unlike the Golden Rams' Rondell White, the Huskies rarely throw to their running back as Quiteh only has 11 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns on the season. Also unlike the Golden Rams, Bloomsburg is quite comfortable using other guys to carry the ball. Both Dai'Shon Munger (119 carries, 649 yards, 2 TD's) and Joe Parsnik (77 carries, 471 yards, 3 TD's) get plenty of touches and both played a role in Bloomsburg's win in West Chester earlier this month. Matt Feiler, Brian Clarke and Chris Steck are all repeat All-PSAC performers on the offensive line.

Bloomsburg quarterback Tim Kelly's (126-218, 1,832 yards, 14 TD's, 7 interceptions) role isn't to win the game necessarily, but to manage it. In that capacity, he is quite effective and his effort against West Chester earlier this year might have been his best game of the season. Although his efficiency in that contest was only 140 and he didn't throw a touchdown, he threw for a season high 262 yards and didn't turn the ball over. Kelly's top targets are Glenn Hutton Jr. (42 catches, 690 yards, 6 TD's including 5 catches for 100 yards against West Chester) and Tony Peregrin (25 catches, 357 yards, 2 TD's). Bloomsburg hasn't thrown to their tight ends as much as they used to, but they are effective targets when employed (18 catches, 233 yards, 1 TD).

Bloomsburg features four time All-PSAC place kicker Danny Fisher who is 10 of 14 on field goals and 54 of 55 on PAT's, although he's missed his last two field goal attempts and had a PAT blocked against Slippery Rock in the PSAC Championship Game. Freshman Lawrence Elliott Jr. is a threat in the return game as he's returned a punt for a 73-yard touchdown, has a kickoff return for 86 yards, and was named All-PSAC as a return specialist.

Defensively, the Huskies front seven are their strength. Linebacker Justin Shirk (111 tackles, 8.0 TFL's, 3 pass breakups including 16 tackles against West Chester this season), defensive end Larry Webster (42 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 8 QB hurries) and defensive tackle Chris Kennedy (23 tackles, 4.0 TFL's) were All-PSAC.

In the secondary, cornerback Gary Postell (61 tackles, 4.0 TFL's, 5 pass breakups, 1 interception) was named All-PSAC. DJ Robinson (43 tackles, 5.0 TFL's, 3 interceptions, 9 pass breakups) mans the other corner while Jonathan Patrick (34 tackles, 5 interceptions) has three interception returns of at least 20 yards.

Analysis:
The top five passing teams in the PSAC - Slippery Rock, Shippensburg, East Stroudsburg, West Chester, and Kutztown - have had success throwing against the Huskies this season, with West Chester posting the fewest yards among them with 305. The questions in this area are whether the Golden Rams can repeat or improve in this area against Bloomsburg's adjustments and how much the weather will impact the passing game. West Chester wasn't able to get the running game going against Bloomsburg and Rondell White was held to under 100 yards against American International last week. West Chester's five All-PSAC offensive linemen have to open some holes to provide a balanced attack, especially in the frigid temperatures that are expected.

Shippensburg is the only team to have beaten the Huskies this season and it's no surprise that they held Bloomsburg to their lowest offensive output of the season at 258 yards. Compare this to the 572 yards that the Huskies amassed against the Golden Rams a few weeks ago. Yielding passing yards to shut down the run seems like the appropriate game plan, but that wasn't effective the last time these two faced each other. The AIC head coach gave a lot of credit to West Chester defensive coordinator Mike Furlong in the first round of the playoffs. The Golden Ram defense will need to have an equally effective game plan to succeed in the second round.

Notes:
Saturday's game marks the final opportunity for the seniors to earn a win over the Huskies...The game will feature 24 of the 58 players named All-PSAC East and both Harlon Hill finalists from this region...A fan bus is being chartered to leave from the West Chester area at 8:30 am on Saturday and return around 6:00 pm. Price is $25. Send an e-mail to Jim Brazill at jimbrazill61@yahoo.com for more information or to reserve your spot...Of 165 teams in Division II, only 16 are still playing at this point in the season. Fans are invited to start this year's Thanksgiving by attending practice which starts at 7:45 am on South Campus. There will still be plenty of time to get to your favorite high school game, enjoy Thanksgiving dinner, then watch the NFL and/or nap. It's been nine years since the Golden Rams have practiced on Thanksgiving morning and it's something Division II football players and fans should truly cherish.

Club News - November 28 Meeting

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Golden Ram Football Club will NOT be meeting on Thursday. Also, according to the Bill Zwaan Football Show facebook page, Coach Zwaan's weekly show will not be held. However, fans are encouraged to attend practice on Thursday morning which starts at 7:45 am on South Campus. Only one in ten Division II teams in the country have the need to practice this week and the team would appreciate your support as they prepare for Bloomsburg. This early start time allows everyone to then attend their favorite local high school contest prior to enjoying a holiday dinner with family and friends.

Finally, now that the regular season has concluded, the AFCA and D2Football.com polls will be suspended until the playoffs conclude. So while the Golden Rams continue postseason play, it's time for you to prepare for the Golden Ram Football Club web site awards. Please note, this has NOTHING to do with any awards that will be presented at the team banquet on February 1. Everyone's submission will be carefully considered and the best answers will be posted on this site a week or so after West Chester's final game of 2013. Game Report - West Chester 38 - American International 7

The #15 Golden Rams defeated the American International Yellow Jackets 38-7 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division II playoffs. West Chester used their big play offense and a stingy defense to throttle the Northeast-10 champions at a chilly Farrell Stadium.

Return specialist Brandon Monk has provided a spark to the Golden Rams all season long and did so with the first touch of the game as he returned the opening kickoff 54 yards to the AIC 40. After a couple of unproductive runs, big play number one was witnessed as Sean McCartney hit Erick Brundidge with a 37-yard pass to the AIC 2. Rondell White covered the remaining two yards and West Chester had an early 7-0.

The Yellow Jackets would respond with their own big kickoff return down to the West Chester 11 before kicker Shawn Leo threw the return man down. With such a short field, it only took AIC four plays to knot the score. The two teams would continue to mirror each other as they each went on ten-play drives that ended with punts. Then both teams would go three-and-out.

Midway through the second quarter, West Chester took a brief 10-7 lead on Leo's 25-yard field goal. But an offsides penalty on AIC caused West Chester to take the points off the board setting up a first and goal at the AIC 4. After AIC stuffed two more rushing attempts, McCartney's third-down pass was intercepted in the end zone. It would be West Chester's only failure in the red zone against the nation's best red zone defense. However, three plays later, Brandon Pepper minimized the damage when he intercepted a pass setting up the West Chester offense at midfield. Then the second big play happened for the West Chester offense as McCartney connected with Eddie Elliott on a 42-yard catch and run touchdown to give the Golden Rams the lead 14-7.

AIC continued to have little success offensively and Shawn Krautzel partially blocked the Yellow Jacket punt giving West Chester the ball at midfield with just 31 seconds left in the half. The Golden Ram offense would only need 12 of those seconds. McCartney found tight end Tim Brown over the middle for 24 yards and Brundidge in the far corner for the 31-yard touchdown. So although the WCU offense only had a handful of big pass plays, they went into halftime with a 21-7 lead with the last touchdown providing a major hit to the AIC morale.

LaRonn Lee hauls in a pass despite defenders hanging on him

Anyone who didn't feel totally comfortable at halftime only had to wait for two minutes after intermission. The Golden Ram defense forced another three-and-out to open the second half, but AIC's ensuing punt rolled down to the West Chester 6. Despite the poor field position, McCartney found Tim Keyser on a long completion who turned around and outraced the AIC secondary for a 94-yard touchdown, the longest in West Chester playoff history. Can you say "big plays"?

With AIC completely demoralized, the remainder of the game was a matter of running out the clock. The Golden Rams did their part in this effort in the fourth quarter when they chewed up over eight minutes on a touchdown drive that ended on a two-yard touchdown pass from McCartney to Shawn Driggins.

While the offense was executing big plays to light up the scoreboard, the Golden Ram defense was the real story. American International entered the game with the 19th best rushing attack in the country but were held to just 51 yards. And almost half of the Yellow Jackets' 218 total yards came on their last three possessions, after the outcome of the game had already been decided. AIC was a measly 3 of 12 on third down and 0 of 2 on fourth down.

Notes - West Chester will travel to play #11 Bloomsburg on Saturday at noon and look to avenge their only loss of the season...Punter Rich Bruno continued his efficient play this season, punting only three times (all in the first half), landing two of them inside the AIC 20 and not allowing a return...White ground out 89 tough yards to set the West Chester career rushing yardage mark...eight different players caught passes from McCartney led by Brundidge's five receptions for 100 yards...Leo was perfect on his five PAT's to tie the school career record in that category...on defense, the two men in the middle - Mike Labor and Ronell Williams - led the way with nine tackles each...Krautzel filled the stat sheet with 7 total tackles, a sack, a pass breakup and the blocked punt...the offensive line did not allow a sack for the sixth time this season.

Game Preview - American International

The #15 Golden Rams (10-1) play their first postseason game since 2008 when they host American International (9-2) of the Northeast-10 Conference this Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon at Farrell Stadium. West Chester received the #3 seed in Super Region I and its only blemish is a three-point loss to Bloomsburg. The preseason favorite to win the Northeast-10 conference, American International received the #6 seed after defeating Stonehill in the NE10 championship game on Saturday.

American International has appeared in the NCAA playoffs one other time. In 2008 they won the Northeast-10 Conference championship and finished the regular season 9-1. As the third seed in the region, AIC hosted Seton Hill (9-2) of the now defunct West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets lost that game 14-7 in front of 732 fans on a warm, but rainy, November afternoon. On that same day, fourth seeded West Chester comfortably defeated NE10 runner-up Southern Connecticut 52-32 at Farrell Stadium.

This season, American International and West Chester shared two common opponents. AIC opened the season with a 21-14 loss at East Stroudsburg and on the first Saturday of November, the Yellow Jackets defeated New Haven 43-34 in West Haven, Connecticut. West Chester played both of those teams at Farrell Stadium, dominating New Haven 45-14 on the first week of the season and coming back to defeat East Stroudsburg 34-20 on homecoming.

Series History:

West Chester leads the overall series with the Yellow Jackets 10-2. The Golden Rams have won the last six meetings, however the two teams haven't faced one another since 1991. West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan has never faced AIC, but is 4-2 all time against NE10 teams and 5-5 in the NCAA Division II playoffs. AIC head coach Art Wilkins is the all-time winningest coach at AIC and is in his 20th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets with a record of 128-78.

Scouting the Opponent:
Although the total offensive yards are very balanced – 2,682 rushing and 2,374 passing – this is a run oriented team by play selection – 504 rushing and 282 passing. And six players have at least 25 carries and 150 yards on the season. Their rushing offense is ranked 19th in the country.

The Yellow Jackets are led on offense by their best player - quarterback Kevin Arduino. Arduino is a dual threat both throwing (151-281, 2,374 yards, 13 TD's, 10 interceptions) and running (167 carries, 942 yards, 20 TD’s). Their top running back coming into the season was All-NE10 player Terrell Williams (60 carries, 484 yards, 4 TD’s), but he only played the first three games of the season before being injured. So now when Arduino does hand off the ball, he gives it to Maurice Easterling (106 carries, 510 yards, 8 TD’s) who is listed on the roster as a wide receiver but has made the move to running back with the loss of Williams. On the offensive line, both center George Grosz and tackle Viondy Merisma were All-NE10 a year ago.

Top receivers are Matt Brown (43 catches, 578 yards, 2 TD’s), 6’3” Stephan Davis (28 catches, 599 yards, 4 TD’s), 6’3” Evan Graham (13 catches, 347 yards, 1 TD), and Cal Brownridge (24 catches, 280 yards, 4 TD’s).

Kicker Jared Hulsey is only 4 of 7 on field goal attempts with a long of 32 yards. All NE10 performer Daniel Backx handles the kickoffs, averaging 56 yards per kick with three touchbacks and has assumed the punting duties averaging 39 yards per punt, landing ten inside the opponents 20 and booting four longer than 50 yards. He’s also had one punt blocked. Brown handles the punt returns, averaging six yards per return and Marcel Depina and Brownridge split the kickoff return chores. Lenroy Neysmith returned both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown.

The AIC defense is stingy when it comes to scoring. They’re 37th in the country in rushing defense, 36th in scoring defense and first in the nation in red zone defense. Andrew Justice (42 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 pass breakups, 1 QB hurry) is listed as a linebacker, plays defensive end, and seems to be everywhere on the field. Starting linebackers Jaquawne Simpkins (94 tackles, 7.0 TFL’s, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups), who was All-NE10 last season, and Demetrius Sneed (69 tackles, 8.0 TFL’s), who was a NE10 All-Rookie last season, are the Yellow Jackets leading tacklers.

Safeties, freshman Daquan Holmes (54 tackles, 3.0 TFL’s, 3 interceptions) and sophomore Darion Chappel (44 tackles, 2 interceptions, 7 pass breakups), are young but talented. Sophomore cornerback Mike Ford (36 tackles, 4 interceptions, 8 pass breakups), who was named to the NE10 All-Rookie team last year, and junior Carron McCluney (43 tackles, 1 interception, 8 pass breakups) round out the young secondary.

Analysis:
Stopping QB Arduino is the obvious key for the Golden Ram defense. Getting it done is the question. The East Stroudsburg game film should provide some clues as he connected on only 40% of his pass attempts and threw two interceptions. But then again, that was the first game of the season and their offense has evolved since then. His 20 rushing touchdowns, including 15 in the last five games, are one more than West Chester's Rondell White, so his ground game is probably a bigger concern. The Golden Ram defense didn't contain the Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg quarterbacks too well, so this will need to be an area of emphasis this week. Also, AIC has two receivers at 6'3" which may pose a challenge for the West Chester secondary.

Except for the kickoff return for touchdown by AIC, West Chester looks to have a decided advantage in special teams play.

Offensively, West Chester will be facing a very good run defense as AIC yields only 116 yards per game on the ground. It would seem their young secondary could be the victim of some of West Chester's passing schemes, but they're not going to be beaten merely due to athleticism. Based on the Yellow Jackets' red zone numbers, long pass plays may be what puts the Golden Rams into the end zone.

Notes:

The winner of this contest will travel to Bloomsburg to face the #2 seed Huskies at noon on Saturday, November 30...Running back Rondell White is 36 rushing yards and two overall touchdowns away from setting West Chester single season records in each of those categories...Kicker Shawn Leo is six PAT's away from setting the West Chester career record in that category.
