Team News - Golden Rams Climb in AFCA Poll

After defeating Millersville 62-7 on Saturday, the Golden Rams (4-0) moved up one spot to #9 in the most recent coaches' poll. Former #8 Pittsburg St (Kansas) suffered a one point loss to Fort Hays St. and fell out of the top ten. West Chester also moved up one spot to #9 in the D2football.com poll.

Sean McCartney is now seventh in the country in passing efficiency with a 175.1 rating. When Andrew Derr's numbers are also considered, the Golden Ram's team passing efficiency is 179.1 which is good for fifth in the nation. The offense is also fifth in third down conversion rate at 58.9%.

Defensively Andrew Cohen is eighth in the country in sacks with 1.25 sacks per game. The defense is 19th in third down conversion rate at 27.9% and 16th in fourth down conversions at 18.2%.

West Chester's next action is at noon on Saturday when they host Lock Haven (0-4) at Farrell Stadium.

Game Report - West Chester 62 - Millersville 7

On a beautiful night for football in West Chester, the Golden Rams dominated the Millersville Marauders by a score of 62-7 to maintain their perfect record after four games.

West Chester controlled the game from start to finish as the offense rolled up 608 yards and scored touchdowns on nine of their 12 possessions while the defense forced five three-and-outs. Anyone could look up and down the box score to compare final statistics, but this one was most interesting. At halftime, seven different West Chester receivers had a catch of at least 20 yards while Millersville had a total of three completions.

Quarterback Sean McCartney had the second best game of his career from a passing efficiency perspective behind, not surprisingly, only last year’s game at Millersville. Brandon Monk had 116 total yards – 79 rushing, 37 receiving – and two scores while Eddie Elliott ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive end Andrew Cohen had a field day – six tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup. Cory Scott had a third down sack to force a punt while big Shaquil Ryder registered his sack on a fourth down play. Kevin Malone had six solo stops while Drew Formica led the Golden Rams with nine total tackles.

The game was far from perfect as a missed blocking assignment led to McCartney getting sacked and losing a fumble. Despite his three catches, Jim Hurley dropped a sure touchdown on a third down play. Rich Bruno missed his first PAT of the season. And Millersville opened the second half with a 74-yard touchdown drive on which the Golden Ram defense showed little resistance. However any momentum that the Marauders might have gained from that was quickly dashed when Jarel Elder returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

All in all, it was everything that a game should have been between an undefeated team and a winless team, which is a positive in itself as the Golden Rams didn’t lose focus during this soft part of the schedule.

Notes – During the Walk of Champions ceremony at halftime, kicker/punter Rich Bruno was recognized as the West Chester Scholar Athlete of the Year...the Family Night crowd was a reported 7,648.

09/22/2013 West Chester 48 - Millersville 3

Under a constant, steady rain, West Chester was effective on both sides of the ball, winning the total offensive yardage number 624 yards to 121 yards. Rondell White rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns, Brandon Monk rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns, and Sean McCartney was 9 of 13 for 168 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense. Linebacker Mike Labor, who had seven tackles and a forced fumble, was one of 22 players to record a tackle for West Chester.

Scouting the Opponent:
Millersville's offense is controlled by quarterback Matt Misley. Last season, he started at quarterback for Wagner against Syracuse; this season he leads the Marauders in both passing (50-98, 617 yards, 8 TD's, 2 interceptions) and rushing (39 rushes, 150 yards). When he does hand the ball off, he generally gives it to Myron Myles (35 rushes, 156 yards). When Misely gets a pass away (Millersville quarterbacks have been sacked 7 times), he looks to 5'8" freshman Malont'a Patterson (11 catches, 182 yards, 3 TD's) or 5'9" freshman Kevin Wiggins (13 catches, 168 yards, 2 TD's).

Millersville changed their defense to a 3-4 this season and are led by linebackers Reggie Slaton (38 tackles, 1 sack) and freshman Logan Kinser (21 tackles, 2 TFL's, 1 interception). The secondary is led by safeties Rasheed Johnson (29 tackles, 1 pass breakup) and P.J. Santos (23 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries). The three men up front are Josh Garnett (12 tackles, 2.5 TFL's), Neil Moloney (10 tackles, 2.0 TFL's), and Drew Seaburg (11 tackles, 2.5 TFL's). Overall, Millersville is young again this season as 17 players made their first collegiate starts in 2014.

Analysis:
Millersville ranks last in the PSAC in scoring defense, giving up 49 points per game, while West Chester ranks third in the conference in scoring offense, scoring 39 points per contest. While the Marauders are stronger against the pass than against the run, Sean McCartney should be able to find plenty of success. This game should also be a chance for the Golden Ram rushing offense to get themselves right before facing more accomplished teams over the coming weeks. The West Chester defense needs to shut down Misely as he accounts for 71% of the Marauder offense.

Former Golden Ram defensive back Nate Pagan has earned the title of hero. Pagan, now coaching wide receivers and kick/punt returners for the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, was identified as a positive match by the National Marrow Donor Program for a young man with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In July, he underwent surgery to harvest cells to be used to treat the patient.

Pagan, a three-year letterman and member of the Athletic Director Academic Honor Roll at West Chester, joins former Golden Ram fullback Jared Bonacquisti who was recognized earlier this year for his life saving donation.

Game Report - West Chester 45 - Seton Hill 10

The Golden Rams moved to 3-0 as they toppled the Seton Hill Griffins by a score of 45-10 Saturday night in Greensburg.

Anyone who sees the final score will conclude that a top ten team manhandled a team that hasn’t seen much success in recent years. And just about all of the underlying statistics would support that conclusion.

The Golden Ram defensive performance was amazing. Seton Hill had 13 drives – they ended with ten punts, one turnover and two scores. And those two scores came late in the game after the score was already 38-0. Of the 236 total yards gained by the Griffins, over half of them (121) came on those two late-game scoring drives. The Golden Rams tallied nine tackles for loss, led by Mike Culbreath (3 for 18 yards), Mike Labor (2 for 16 yards) and Andrew Cohen (2 for 9 9 yards). In the waning minutes of the first half, Drew Formica forced a key Seton Hill fumble inside the West Chester five-yard line that rolled out of the end zone resulting in a touchback. There was relentless pressure on the Griffin quarterbacks and the Seton Hill running game averaged just 2.5 yards per carry.

Meanwhile, the offense got off to a sluggish beginning. West Chester’s first drive was highlighted by a Sean McCartney 21-yard completion to Mike Doty (it would be Doty’s only catch of the game), but it ended on downs at the Seton Hill 38 after they failed to gain three yards on third and fourth down. The second offensive series also stalled, but Rich Bruno salvaged the effort with a 32-yard field goal to give the Golden Rams a 3-0 lead. Keep in mind, last season, West Chester failed to score on its opening drive only four times in 15 games. West Chester’s third possession was even worse, with a holding penalty and a sack ending in a net ten-yard loss and a three-and-out.

The offense perked up in the second quarter. McCartney topped off a 45-yard drive with a perfectly placed 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Shawn Driggins who made a nice diving catch. McCartney was on point on the next drive as he hit Erick Brundidge in stride down the left sideline. Brundidge hauled it in and streaked the remainder of the way for the 81-yard touchdown. On West Chester’s final possession of the first half, Brandon Monk picked up 48 yards on four carries before McCartney connected with Brundidge for a 32-yard touchdown to set the score at 24-0.

Then with under a minute left in the first half, one of West Chester’s worst fears was realized. All-American linebacker Ronell Williams suffered an apparent knee injury and had to be helped off the field. He would not return to action and was seen on crutches after the game. There is word that the injury had malicious intent and was intentional, but those claims have not been corroborated.

However devastating it was (and may be) for West Chester, the injury did have one positive affect in this game. The coaching staff has been imploring the team to be more physical for quite some time, but few have responded to those pleadings. Until this point. The West Chester team was noticeably more physical on both sides of the ball in the second half. One specific event was the massive hit that Dan Sherry laid on the return man on the opening kick of the second half.

In the meantime, Monk scored a touchdown around the left side from 40 yards out and McCartney snuck it into the endzone from one-yard out on fourth down to increase the Golden Ram lead to 38-0. Later Andrew Derr, who picked up 41 yards on five carries out of the wildcat position, connected with Brundidge for his third touchdown catch. Earlier on that drive, on a third and eight, Derr did a great job of scrambling out of the pocket and launching a 56-yard pass to tight end Tim Brown to keep the drive alive.

Redshirt freshman Pat Moriarty got an opportunity to take some snaps, handing off to classmates Jarel Elder (10 carries for 49 yards) and Anthony Brown (2 carries for 9 yards).

Notes – Despite playing less than a full half, Williams led the defense with nine tackles...Fellow linebacker Mike Labor continued his consistent play with eight total tackles, including a pass breakup and a 15-yard sack...Eddie Elliott had 24 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving...Brundidge finished with six catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns...Bruno is perfect on his 16 PAT's this season...Shannon Mayer had two catches in his first game of the season.

Game Preview - Seton Hill

The #10 Golden Rams (2-0) travel to Greensburg, PA to take on the Seton Hill Griffins (1-1) for their homecoming on Saturday. Kickoff at Offutt Field is set for 6:00 pm.

Series History:

This will be the first time these two teams meet on the football field.

Scouting the Opponent:
Seton Hill was a women's college until 2002. The Griffins inaugural football season was 2005 and they joined the now defunct West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2006. After finishing the 2008 regular season 9-2, they advanced to the NCAA playoffs and defeated American International in the first round before getting trounced by California in the second round. From 2009 through 2012, the Griffins had a cumulative record of just 4-40. As part of the WVIAC breakup after the 2011-12 school year, Seton Hill, along with Pitt-Johnstown (which does not sponsor football), joined the PSAC. The Griffins lone victory last season was a 17-10 win over Cheyney and they're coming off a 27-16 win over Lock Haven last week.

After amassing a 25-8 record in three seasons at Widener University, head coach Isaac Collins is seeking the same level of success in his second season at Seton Hill. And so far this season, he's off to a good start. Last season the Griffins totaled just 22 touchdowns. Consider that Rondell White himself had 24 touchdowns for the Golden Rams. And in 2013, the Griffins surrendered almost five sacks per contest. Compare that to West Chester's average of one per game against a schedule that included four games against playoff participants. But this year's Griffin offense is markedly improved after the first two games.

Sophomore Jarvis McClam started and finished last season as a wide receiver (16 catches, 132 yards, 1 TD). However, he played five games at quarterback and used his legs (107 carries, 476 yards, 4 TD's) more than his arm (32-81 246 yards, 1 TD, 1 int) to move the Griffin offense. Throwing the ball when McClam lined up wide was Nick Halfhill (91-173, 1,002 yards, 9 TD's, 11 interceptions) who has now been moved to tight end. So who's playing quarterback this season? Primarily Drew Jackson (32-76, 440 yards, 5 TD's, 1 interception) who missed last year due to an injury, although Dan Pietrangelo (10-13, 97 yards) has also seen time under center. The offensive line has yet to yield a sack. Top receivers are FJ Williams (8 catches, 122 yards, 2 TD's) and Erik Kerns (7 catches, 123 yards, 1 TD), but nine other players have at least one catch. Brandon Stout (32 carries, 123 yards) leads the rushing attack.

Despite registering six sacks and four interceptions over their first two games, Seton Hill has the second worst defense in the PSAC, surrendering 509 yards (184 rushing, 325 passing) and 35 points per game. After last season, linebacker Tyler Zimmer (11 tackles) was All-PSAC West, All-Super Region 1, and an Academic All-American. He's flanked by Tim Johnson (18 tackles, 3.5 TFL's, 1 forced fumble). Up front is Arthur Tsapdong (10 tackles, 2.0 TFL's) and Alex Attia (9 tackles, 2.0 TFL's). Ricardo Housen (12 tackles, 1 int, 2 PBU's) and Otis Williams (10 tackles, 1 PBU) are a pair of big defensive backs, while Phillip Moreland (9 solo tackles, 5 PBU's) leads the PSAC in pass breakups.

Analysis:
Saturday starts a string of three games against opponents that went a combined 5-28 last season. No opponent should be overlooked, and despite the Golden Rams' 2-0 record, they have yet to look sharp this season. Sean McCartney, the PSAC's top-rated passer with a 161.8 efficiency, should be able to take advantage of a secondary that yields 325 yards per game through the air. Seton Hill doesn't have a grind-it-out offense as five of their seven offensive touchdowns have originated outside the red zone. So the Golden Ram defense needs to pressure the quarterback while being weary of the big play.

Game Report - West Chester 38 - Mercyhurst 14

The Golden Rams moved to 2-0 as they beat up on the Mercyhurst Lakers by a score of 38-14 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Farrell Stadium.

After the first four drives of the game, West Chester fans had to be feeling pretty good. And why not? The Golden Ram offense went on a six minute, 55-yard drive to open the scoring. The offense was evenly divided: 30 yards on the ground including 22 by Brandon Monk, and 25 through the air including a critical four-yard Sean McCartney to Eddie Elliott completion on fourth down to extend the drive. The possession was capped off by a McCartney two-yard naked bootleg to the end zone. West Chester’s second drive was the complete opposite. Erick Brundidge took a little swing pass and used a Mike Doty block to dash down the left sideline for a 74-yard touchdown reception.

Meanwhile, the West Chester defense was doing its part, forcing a three-and-out on Mercyhurst’s first possession and then a Drew Formica pick six from 39 yards out on their second possession. After four exchanges, the Golden Rams had 21 points and the Lakers had only 11 yards.

But then Mercyhurst started to move the ball a little with their passing game and the Golden Rams had three straight three-and-outs. And just when the West Chester offense gained a first down midway through the second quarter, Elliot fumbled which resulted in a Mercyhurst scoop and score. Suddenly it was 21-7 and the Golden Ram offense had been absent for a while.

Perhaps the Mercyhurst score was a wakeup call. After a McCartney to Doty 18-yard completion and a roughing the passer penalty, Tim Brown hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass to reignite the offense. Mercyhurst failed to convert a fourth down at midfield with under a minute left in the half. Although the Golden Rams managed to move the ball down to the 25, a 42-yard Rich Bruno field goal attempt was blocked and the teams went to the locker room.

Under a steady rain, West Chester maintained control of the game in the third quarter. Mercyhurst had drives of just 2, 5, -2 and 14 yards. However, the West Chester offense, despite moving the ball, was thwarted by a slippery snap on a field goal attempt and later by an interception. Enter Jarel Elder. The redshirt freshman had rushes of six, eight and six yards before a Shawn Driggins holding call stopped the momentum. But McCartney hit Doty for a 25-yard pickup and then Brown for a 31-yard touchdown.

The two teams traded scores – Mercyhurst a 34-yard touchdown pass and West Chester a 22-yard field goal – to close the scoring. Then everyone got to play as Anthony Brown carried the ball five straight times to run out the clock.

Notes – The West Chester defense held Mercyhurst to 255 total yards – 43 rushing, 212 passing – with 99 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter after the outcome had been determined...There were 22 Golden Rams who registered at least one tackle in the game, led by Andrew Cohen who had seven stops including West Chester’s lone sack...Al-Hajj Shabazz had three pass breakups while Mike Labor, Ronell Williams, Ralph Reeves, Shaquil Ryder, and John Dubyk each registered a quarterback hurry...Adam Dempsey had six catches for 43 yards and Dion Shaw made his first two West Chester receptions.
