Game Report - West Chester 62 - Millersville 7

On a beautiful night for football in West Chester, the Golden Rams dominated the Millersville Marauders by a score of 62-7 to maintain their perfect record after four games.

West Chester controlled the game from start to finish as the offense rolled up 608 yards and scored touchdowns on nine of their 12 possessions while the defense forced five three-and-outs. Anyone could look up and down the box score to compare final statistics, but this one was most interesting. At halftime, seven different West Chester receivers had a catch of at least 20 yards while Millersville had a total of three completions.

Quarterback Sean McCartney had the second best game of his career from a passing efficiency perspective behind, not surprisingly, only last year’s game at Millersville. Brandon Monk had 116 total yards – 79 rushing, 37 receiving – and two scores while Eddie Elliott ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive end Andrew Cohen had a field day – six tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup. Cory Scott had a third down sack to force a punt while big Shaquil Ryder registered his sack on a fourth down play. Kevin Malone had six solo stops while Drew Formica led the Golden Rams with nine total tackles.

The game was far from perfect as a missed blocking assignment led to McCartney getting sacked and losing a fumble. Despite his three catches, Jim Hurley dropped a sure touchdown on a third down play. Rich Bruno missed his first PAT of the season. And Millersville opened the second half with a 74-yard touchdown drive on which the Golden Ram defense showed little resistance. However any momentum that the Marauders might have gained from that was quickly dashed when Jarel Elder returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

All in all, it was everything that a game should have been between an undefeated team and a winless team, which is a positive in itself as the Golden Rams didn’t lose focus during this soft part of the schedule.

Notes – During the Walk of Champions ceremony at halftime, kicker/punter Rich Bruno was recognized as the West Chester Scholar Athlete of the Year...the Family Night crowd was a reported 7,648.
