Game Report - West Chester 17 - Bloomsburg 14

West Chester (6-0, 3-0) remained undefeated as they knocked off Bloomsbrug (2-3, 0-2) by a score of 17-14.

It was another dominating Golden Ram defensive performance as the Huskies were held to just nine first downs, 165 total yards and just 2 of 13 on third down conversions. In fact the best offense Bloomsburg had was their defense as two West Chester interceptions led to the Huskies’ 14 points.

The game opened with the Nate Barnes show on Bloomsburg’s first series, as he had a tackle for no gain, a quarterback hurry and a seven-yard sack. West Chester got into scoring position until a third-down sack took them out of field goal range. It was one of five sacks on the day for the Huskies’ defense, with four of them coming on third down plays.

Trailing 14-3 at halftime, West Chester came out of the locker room as they often do at the start of games – marching the length of the field for a touchdown, this time a Mark Dukes 11-yard run. And quarterback A.J. Long made up for his two picks when he lofted a perfect pass to the front corner of the end zone to Elijah Hall for a 24-yard score. It was Hall’s first career touchdown.

Bloomsburg threatened on their ensuing possession, but Tyler Morrissey blocked a potential game-tying 37-yard field goal attempt to preserve West Chester’s narrow lead. Although the Golden Rams weren’t able to run out the clock, they were able to bleed a lot of time as well as force Bloomsburg to burn all of their time outs. Bloomsburg’s last gasp ended on a sack by Morrisey and Diquan Gilbert and an incomplete pass.

Who would ever thought there would be a game where Bloomsburg had more pass attempts than West Chester (26-23) and the Golden Rams would have twice as many rushing plays as the Huskies (49-24)? Dukes turned in 77 yards to go along with his score. And Lex Rosario posted a solid eight catches for 91 yards as the number one receiver. Barnes and Shaquille James each had a team-high six tackles, Ch'aim Smith notched a sack and Nydair Rouse nabbed an interception deep in Golden Ram territory.
