Player News - Sean McCartney Harlon Hill Finalist

Senior quarterback Sean McCartney has been named one of nine finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy. The Harlon Hill Trophy is presented to NCAA Division II's College Football Player of the Year.

McCartney ended the season 250 of 418 (59.8%) for 3,744 yards, 42 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a efficiency rating of 163.3. He ranks nationally in several of those passing categories, including first in touchdown passes, fifth in passing yards, seventh in passing efficiency and 11th in yards per completion. When factoring in McCartney's two rushing touchdowns, he also ranks fourth in the country in points responsible for with 266. McCartney eclipsed 400 yards passing in a game twice (Lock Haven and Slippery Rock) and threw for five touchdowns in a game thrice (Lock Haven, Shippensburg, and Slippery Rock). This season, the team co-captain was named PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week twice (Millersville and Shippensburg), All-PSAC East first team and PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year.

His passing yards and passing touchdowns are both West Chester single season records. Going back to last season, he threw at least one touchdown pass in 19 consecutive games, breaking the record of 17 previously held by current Golden Ram offensive coordinator Bill Zwaan, Jr. In fact, the only break to a streak that would have extended to 33 games was an injury that he incurred in the first quarter of last year's game at Shippensburg. As a starter the past two seasons, he's compiled a record of 23-4 including 4-2 in the playoffs. On the West Chester career list, McCartney finished second in passing yards with 9,595 (Mitros, 9,834 from 1996-99), second in completions with 658 (Mitros, 819 from 1996-99), second in passing touchdowns with 92 (Mitros, 94 from 1996-99), and first in completion percentage with 59.0%.

Regional voting ended November 28 which narrowed the field to two players from each of four regions with the exception of Super Region 4 which had a tie. Those nine players are now placed on the national ballot with voting ending December 13. The winner will be announced via webcast on Friday, December 19 and presented with the trophy at a luncheon on the University of North Alabama campus on Jan. 9, 2015.
