Alumni News - Byrne to ChesCo Sports Hall of Fame

Former Golden Ram football player John "Jack" Byrne has been named to the 2012 Inductee Class of the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame. Byrne grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School where he lettered in football for three years and won the city championship. At West Chester State, he began his football career as a backup running back to two-time All-American Joe Iacone. On the urging of secondary coach Walk Buechele, head coach Jim Bonder agreed to move Byrne to the defensive secondary where he won all-league honors in his senior season.

A three-year letterwinner, Byrne graduated from West Chester in 1964 and subsequently received his master's degree also from West Chester in 1970. He went on to start and coach the football program at West Chester East High School where he later became the athletic director. Byrne was inducted into the Killinger Hall of Fame in 1996. The 2012 Annual Induction Banquet will be held on Saturday, November 10th at the Coatesville Country Club.
