Game Report - West Chester 29 - Kutztown 7

Question - How can a game that wasn’t as close as the final score simultaneously never feel like the lead was comfortable? Answer – Squandered opportunities.

While the box score shows that West Chester was successful on five of its six trips into the red zone, consider that three of those “successes” were Rich Bruno field goals and a drive that stalled at the Kutztown 22 ended in a missed field goal. In fact, the first player to enter the end zone was cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz who intercepted a Kutztown pass and used a nice Kevin Malone block to get six points for the Golden Rams.

That was just one example of the dominating defensive performance. Other than a token fourth quarter touchdown, the defense didn’t allow a Golden Bear drive of more than 30 yards. Kutztown converted only three of 12 third down plays. And West Chester’s two interceptions - Drew Formica had the other one – were twice as many as Kutztown had thrown in their preceding five games combined. R-Fr George Shipp, starting at defensive end for injured Mike Culbreath, registered his first two collegiate sacks. Big Shaquil Ryder led West Chester with ten total tackles, including a sack and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Jeremy Irving tallied a sack and a forced fumble. And of course, one of Andrew Cohen’s four tackles was a sack. That’s a total of five times that West Chester put the Kutztown quarterback down. And the defense limited the Golden Bears to just 79 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, the offense moved the ball rather easily between the 20’s. Brandon Monk rushed for 129 yards with a 6.1 yards average per carry. Quarterback Sean McCartney had his worst game this season, throwing for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Many QB’s would love to have a game like that. One notable play was late in the first half, on a third and fifteen from the Kutztown 17, the deceptively mobile signal caller got flushed out of the pocket and while rolling to his left, threw a bullet in the end zone to Mike Doty for a touchdown. Doty ended the night with seven catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

Notes - Eddie Elliott went over 100 yards of offense with 46 yards rushing and 89 yards receiving…After missing the last two games due to injury, Adam Dempsey returned and made three catches for 20 yards…R-Fr Tyler Drob made his first college start in place of Antoine Bland who was injured against Lock Haven. Bland is expected to be ready for next Saturday’s game against Shippensburg…Penalties continue to plague West Chester as they were flagged eight times for 73 yards giving Kutztown two first downs…Kutztown landed five of their eight punts inside the 20 including one at the five and two at the one.
