Game Report - West Chester 33 - Slippery Rock 10

Channeling Chase Utley from the 2008 World Series - PSAC F***ing Champions!!! The Golden Rams (10-0) scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to get out to a 27-3 lead and rode that to a 33-10 win over Slippery Rock (9-2) to capture the PSAC Championship for the first time since 1971. West Chester is assured a spot in the 2018 NCAA Division II playoffs and just where they are seeded will be announced Sunday at 5:00pm.

Slippery Rock opened the game with a 37-yard kickoff return followed by a 28-yard pass play that got them down to the Golden Ram 31. But the West Chester defense held the Rock to a 32-yard field goal. After getting 44 yards on their first possession, Slippery Rock would gain only 15 yards on their next five possessions.

Meanwhile, West Chester quarterback A.J. Long led the Golden Ram offense to pay dirt four times. On the first possession, Long ran for 32 yards and Mike Class scored on a 43-yard run. The next drive was a marathon – 73 yards in almost eight minutes, capped off by a gutsy fourth-down 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cody Boozel. Long scored the third touchdown himself on a 28-yard run. West Chester’s fourth touchdown came on a 44-yard catch and run by Lex Rosario on a ball that seemingly went right through the defender’s hands.

The Rock scored a touchdown when they converted a third-and-long into a 51-yard touchdown. Momentum seemed to swing as the Golden Rams went three and out. But Jarey Elder nabbed an interception, his first of two in the contest, and two plays later, Long connected with Class on a 17-yard swing pass for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but West Chester led 33-10 at the half. And there would be no more scoring.

In the second half, the West Chester offense was held to a total of just 50 yards and Brendan Paulison punted on their first five possessions. On the other side, the Golden Rams defense was content to keep the game in front of them. The Rock was able to move the ball, but consumed a lot of clock in doing so. On their first two possessions, Slippery Rock moved the ball deep into Golden Ram territory, but the first ended on downs and the second was stopped by an Omar Peterkin interception. From there, it was merely a matter of watching the clock wind down.

In the battle of dual-threat quarterbacks, Long was clearly the better of the two. He finished with 135 yards and one touchdown rushing along with 153 yards and three touchdowns passing. As a result, he was named MVP of the championship game. Linebacker Nate Barnes had 11 tackles including 2.0 sacks while Tyler Morrissey made nine stops. Defensive tackle Shaq Ryder had two sacks and Peterkin notched a sack to go along with his pick.

It wasn’t a perfect game by any means. West Chester had two PAT’s blocked and the stifled second half offense would have been worrisome if the score were closer. But a dominating first half performance and an eight minute advantage in time of possession were more than enough to limit Slippery Rock to their lowest point total of the season.

Team News - NCAA Playoff Possibilities

The regional rankings have been posted for a few weeks which has generated some questions about how they are determined. Anyone who’s interested can read the details of how the Division II Football playoffs work in the official 2018 Division II Football Pre-Championship Manual. For everyone else, here’s a high level overview.

For Division II football, the NCAA seeds seven teams from each of four regions in the country. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference is a member of Super Region 1, along with the Northeast 10, the Mountain East Conference, and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. To dispel one myth, unlike soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and some other sports, no team receives automatic qualification for winning its conference for the football playoffs.

Each team is evaluated primarily based on its Division II record, weighted opponents winning percentage (its opponents’ winning percentage and its opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage), head-to-head record, and results versus common opponents. Other criteria considered include record on the road, record against teams with a record of .500 or better and record in non-conference, in-region games. So even though conference champions don’t get an automatic bid, conference champions typically grade highly in the qualification criteria.

If we evaluate the 46 teams from Super Region 1 and sort them based on winning percentage plus weighted OWP (far right column), we get the following list:

This list matches the NCAA's official regional rankings with two exceptions:
- Fairmont St is #10 instead of Shepherd, due to their head-to-head result which Fairmont St won.
- West Chester and New Haven are swapped for no known reason.

So it's not "disrespect" for the Golden Rams that they're third, but rather the fact that West Chester has faced teams with really bad records and, as a result, have the worst weighted OWP among any of the teams in the top ten.

Games this Weekend

#1 Notre Dame (10-0) at Seton Hill (1-9)
#2 LIU Post (9-0) vs #4 New Haven (8-0)
#3 West Chester (9-0) at #7 Slippery Rock (9-1)
#5 Hillsdale (9-1) at Indianapolis (8-1)
#6 Kutztown (8-1) at Edinboro (6-4)
#8 Tiffin (9-1) vs Findlay (7-3)
#9 Ohio Dominican (8-2) at Lake Erie (0-9)
#10 Fairmont St (8-2) at West Liberty (3-7)

A Golden Ram Win

A win on Saturday gives the Golden Rams the PSAC championship and assures them of a playoff spot, but likely keeps them at #3 in the region. Notre Dame will surely take a hit to their OWP, but they also have a 90% chance of defeating a hapless Seton Hill. They seem to be positioned to be no worse than second. In addition to a conference crown, the winner of the Northeast-10 championship will also get a significant boost in OWP. If it's LIU Post, they may become the top seed in the region. New Haven, which already has a better OWP than the Golden Rams, will likely rise to two if it captures the Northeast-10. So it's either 1. LIU Post, 2. Notre Dame, 3. West Chester; or 1. Notre Dame, 2. New Haven, 3. West Chester. That still means another game at John A. Farrell Stadium this season.

A Golden Ram Loss

It's worth noting that if Hillsdale, Kutztown, Slippery Rock and Tiffin all win on Saturday, there will be eight teams in the region with one or no losses, and one of them will not be going to the playoffs since only seven teams from the region are invited. So which team will be eliminated? Oftentimes, it's the one with the weakest schedule, which should concern Golden Rams fans. The only factor that might save West Chester in such a scenario is their head-to-head result against Kutztown which may be enough to overcome the OWP deficit that the Golden Rams have.

Conclusion

So it's real easy on Saturday. Root for a Golden Ram win. Otherwise, hope for a loss by Hillsdale, Kutztown, or Tiffin. Otherwise, it'll be a long, nervous wait until the NCAA's announcement on Sunday at 5:00pm.

Game Preview - Slippery Rock

The #9 Golden Rams (9-0) travel to Slippery Rock (9-1) on Saturday in pursuit of their first PSAC title since the championship was resurrected in 2008. Both teams swept their division foes for the right to compete for the conference crown. Kickoff at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium is scheduled for 1:00pm.

This is West Chester's second consecutive trip to the PSAC championship game and third in the last four year, however the Golden Rams fell to IUP last season and dropped the game to Slippery Rock in 2015. Both of those games were played at Farrell Stadium.

Series History:

The Rock narrowly leads the series between the two schools 10-8. Head coach Bill Zwaan is 3-4 against Slippery Rock while his counterpart Shawn Lutz is closing his third season as head coach there.

In the final game of the regular season in 2006, with both teams owning a 7-3 record and the winner destined for the NCAA playoffs, West Chester won by a score of 21-20 when the Rock's 48-yard field goal attempt drifted wide left in the pouring rain in Slippery Rock. In 2010 also in Slippery Rock, Shawn Leo kicked a field goal to put the Golden Rams up 27-24 with two and a half minutes left. But the Rock converted a 47-yard field goal of their own with 31 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The Rock quickly scored a touchdown in overtime, but Nick Garcia blocked the point after giving West Chester hope. Although the Golden Rams picked up a first down, they were unable to get into the end zone and fell 33-27.

West Chester crushed the Rock in the first round of the 2014 NCAA playoffs at Farrell Stadium. The 2015 PSAC championship game pitted these two schools against each other, but Slippery Rock humiliated the Golden Rams in that game. The Rock has also won the past two games as these two teams faced each other in the early season crossover mathcup in 2016 and 2017.

09/09/2017 Slippery Rock 49 - West Chester 42

Despite outgaining the Rock by over 100 yards, the Golden Rams dropped a 49-42 decision in Slippery Rock. West Chester was doomed by 17 penalties resulting in 162 yards and the Rock's big plays. Slippery Rock touchdowns included a 96-yard kickoff return, a 43-yard run, a 37-yard pass, a 47-yard punt return, and a 90-yard pass. But after West Chester tied the game at 42 with six minutes left, Slippery Rock executed a 9-play, 81-yard drive for the final score.

Quarterback Paul Dooley was 19 of 38 for 261 yards and three touchdowns, primarily targeting Rasheem James (7 catches, 95 yards, 2 TD's). A.J. Long had four carries for 15 yards, but did not attempt a pass.

Jarey Elder and Shaquille James each had an interception and Jordan Burney recovered a fumble. All three turnovers led to West Chester touchdowns. Linebacker Tyler Morrissey had a game-high ten tackles and Brendan Paulison averaged 58 yards on seven punts.

Scouting the Opponent:
For the fourth consecutive year, the Rock has turned to a transfer for their quarterback. Unlike the previous three which came from FCS schools with just one year of eligibility left, dual-threat Roland Rivers III (144 of 235, 1,987 yards, 21 TD's, 6 int's; 91 carries, 437 yards, 7 TD's) is a junior from Gulf South Conference power Valdosta St. He is the Rock's third signal caller as the first two encountered injuries early in the season.

Eight different receivers have double-digit receptions, topped by Henry Litwin (37 catches, 617 yards, 6 TD's), Jermaine Wynn Jr. (36 catches, 494 yards, 7 TD's) and 6'3" Austin Scott (18 catches, 376 yards, 2 TD's). At 6'2, 218lb, Delaware transfer running back Wes Hills (147 carries, 1,113 yards, 12 TD's; 20 catches, 141 yards) is a big threat in the offense. The line is anchored by All-PSAC right tackle Steve Gaviglia.

The Rock's top tacklers are their three linebackers: Canisius transfer LB Brad Zaffram (61 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss), Tim Vernick (57 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss), and Trysten McDonald (53 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 3 fumble recoveries). The secondary is led by free safety Kyle Hall (50 tackles, 5 interceptions), Ohio State transfer Eric Glover-Williams (29 tackles, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups), and defensive back Tyree Spearman (16 tackles, 8 pass breakups). Defensive end Chad Kuhn (40 tackles, 7.5 sacks) and Indiana State transfer defensive end Trey Blandford (34 tackles, 7.0 sacks) put the pressure on the quarterback.

Glover-Williams and Jermaine Wynn Jr. handle the bulk of the punt and kick returns. All-PSAC Kicker Jake Chapla is only 12 of 21 on field goals, but that includes 2 of 4 from 50+. He's only missed one PAT in 54 attempts. Chapla also does the punting and kickoffs and has been named PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week four times this season.

Analysis:
Slippery Rock’s only loss this season came at Shippensburg in a manner that you almost have to see to believe. The Rock was leading 21-18 and had just thwarted a Shippensburg drive by intercepting the ball at the two-yard line with a minute left. But with only needing to run out the clock, on their second play, the Rock quarterback wasn’t ready for the snap which bounced off him and was recovered by the Raider defense in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Despite being down 25-21 with just 56 seconds remaining, Slippery Rock drove down to the Shippensburg 30-yard line, but their second down pass was intercepted to end the threat.

These two teams are among the top four in the PSAC in most offensive and defensive categories. Both teams have dual-threat quarterbacks, a balanced offensive attack, a defense that likes to get after the quarterback, and solid special teams. Both teams protect the ball well with West Chester being +10 and Slippery Rock being +6. If you can believe it, the Rock is actually penalized more often than the Golden Rams, so as long as West Chester doesn't get into retaliation, that may play into WCU's favor. And what impact will the freezing winds have on the game? This is expected to be the most challenging opponent that either will have faced thus far this season, and that's to be expected for a conference championship game.

Massey Ratings gives the Rock a one-point edge in the game while Atomic Football favors the Rock by four.
