Player News - Golden Rams Named All PSAC East

Headlined by quarterback Sean McCartney who was named PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year, 13 West Chester Golden Rams were named to the 2014 PSAC East first and second teams. Nine members of the offense and four players from the defense were recognized by the conference's coaches.

Along with McCartney, named to the first team offense was junior running back Brandon Monk, junior tight end Tim Brown, senior center Derek Schatz, senior left guard James Colivas and sophomore left tackle Doug Gilbert. Named to the second team offense was junior running back Eddie Elliott, senior right guard Antoine Bland and senior wide receiver Mike Doty.

Named to the first team defense was senior cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz, senior linebacker Ronell Williams and junior defensive end Andrew Cohen. Named to the second team defense was senior defensive end Mike Culbreath.

This site rarely editorializes, but it's absolutely ridiculous that the PSAC's sixth leading tackler, and third in the PSAC East, was not named to either the first or second team. Senior linebacker Mike Labor has 83 tackles (6th), 10.5 tackles for loss (10th) and three forced fumbles (T-3rd).

So far this season, McCartney is 202 of 335 for 2,998 yards (17th nationally), eight interceptions and 34 touchdowns (T-2nd) for an efficiency rating of 164.2 (7th). He has also scored two touchdowns rushing making him responsible for 216 points (T-9th).

Club News - November 20 Meeting

The Golden Ram Football Club will be meeting on Thursday at 7:45pm at Timothy's in the Parkway Shopping Center in West Chester. The meeting will begin immediately following the Bill Zwaan Football Show which is also held at Timothy's starting at 7:00pm. Golden Ram fans unable to attend the show can listen to it live on WCHE1520AM.COM. The meeting will not be broadcast.

According to the Bill Zwaan Football Show facebook page, junior running back Eddie Elliott and sophomore defensive back Pete Galiano will be the special guests on Coach Zwaan's show.

Elliott has been a dual threat all season and it was no different in Saturday's 28-17 win at Indiana. He had two catches for 20 yards and nine carries for 44 yards including a bulk of the yardage on two of West Chester's touchdown drives. For the season Elliott has carried the ball 94 times for 468 yards and three touchdowns and has 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown.

As a backup safety in a deep and variable secondary, Galiano primarily sees action on special teams and in nickel packages. This season he has racked up 30 total tackles including a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. On Saturday at Indiana, he logged a solo tackle and an assist in the secondary during the third quarter.

Come out to Timothy's at 7:00pm to participate in the show live.

Team News - Concerned or Confident?

As the Golden Rams enter the NCAA Division II playoffs this Saturday, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned but likewise several reasons to be confident.

Concerned:
  • Penalties – West Chester is fifth in the PSAC with 71.5 penalty yards per game. Among the 24 teams in the postseason, only North Alabama, West Georgia, Ouachita Baptist, Delta St, and Concord gift their opponents more yards than the Golden Rams. But the bigger concern is the trend over the last two games. Against East Stroudsburg and Indiana, West Chester was flagged 11 times for 122 yards and eight times for 88 yards respectively. Among those 19 calls, seven were offensive holding, two were offensive pass interference, three were defensive pass interference, four were personal fouls, and one was an unsportsmanlike conduct. That sure looks like a lack of team discipline. As the stakes get higher, the play can get more chippy and Slippery Rock has a tendency to bring out the worst in an opponent.

  • Inconsistent Special Teams Play – We saw Jarel Elder return a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown against Millersville and Brandon Monk return a punt 80 yards for a touchdown at Indiana. But we also saw Elder lose a muffed punt against Cheyney and Monk do the same at East Stroudsburg. We’ve seen kicker Rich Bruno go 8 for 8 in PAT’s against Cheyney but 1 for 4 at Indiana. He landed four punts inside the Indiana 20, but his fifth one only went 14 yards. Special teams is called on only about a dozen times a game, but the spotlight is on those plays as points, field position or ball possession are critical in the playoffs.

  • Rushing Defense – West Chester is in the middle of the PSAC when it comes to stopping the run, allowing 151 yards per contest. Among playoff teams, only Angelo St surrenders more yards on the ground than West Chester. And any opponent of the Golden Rams that has committed itself to the run this season has been successful. Usually pass oriented Shippensburg was without their starting quarterback and their backup wasn’t very well equipped to throw either. As a result, they only threw five passes in the second half with all of them coming in the first seven minutes of the third quarter. As a consequence, the Raiders ran 57 times for 322 yards for a 5.6 yards/carry average. Run oriented Bloomsburg rushed 47 times for 454 yards and four touchdowns for a gaudy team average of 9.7 yards/carry. And Indiana, with their trio of running backs, picked up 202 yards on 44 carries for a 4.6 yards/carry average. Those types of efforts aren’t going to get it done, especially on Saturday against Slippery Rock, a team that averages 231 yards/game on the ground which is more than Bloomsburg. Most defenses run a 4-3 front except in obvious passing downs when they’ll switch to a nickel or dime package. But West Chester is the exact opposite – they run a 4-2-5 unless it’s an obvious running down at which time they will bring in another linebacker. Slippery Rock runs the ball an average of 50 times a game. The question is will the defense be oriented to that.

Confident:
  • McCartney and the Offense – West Chester is ranked seventh in the country in team passing efficiency, with Concord and Harding being the only playoff teams ranked higher. This is primarily due to sixth-year senior Sean McCartney who has completed 60% of his passes and thrown for 2,998 yards and 34 touchdowns this season. Eleven different players have caught passes this season, but the top three are Mike Doty (40 catches, 611 yards, 9 TD’s), tight end Tim Brown (37 catches, 679 yards, 12 TD’s) and speedster Erick Brundidge (33 catches, 691 yards, 8 TD’s). Five more players have at least 15 catches this season, so McCartney has a lot of different targets. To provide balance, running back Brandon Monk has 1,134 yards and 9 TD’s rushing. And Eddie Elliott has proven to be a dual threat (468 yards and 3 TD’s rushing, 287 yards and 1 TD receiving). The offense has a lot of capability and versatility which keeps defenses guessing.

  • Playoff Experience – Obviously only four teams make it to the national semi-finals last year and West Chester was one of them. This year’s team returned 14 starters including linebackers Mike Labor and Ronell Williams and the entire secondary of Al-Hajj Shabazz, Blaise Schieler, Brandon Pepper and Drew Formica. Up front, starter Andrew Cohen is back and Barry Lyons played in every game. Derek Schatz and James Colivas started on the offensive line and Antoine Bland also played in every game last season. And not to be overlooked, this is head coach Bill Zwaan’s seventh trip to the Division II playoffs and his teams have advanced to the semi-finals twice. The bottom line is there are a lot of guys on this team that know what playoff football is all about.

  • Pass defense – Almost every team in the playoffs has a good pass defense and West Chester is right there, ranked 11th in the country in team passing efficiency defense. The Golden Rams lead the PSAC in allowing the worst completion percentage, fewest yards, and fewest touchdowns. Senior captain Al-Hajj Shabazz leads the way with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups while Drew Formica has two picks and two pass breakups. Putting pressure on the quarterback is Andrew Cohen who leads West Chester with 9.0 sacks this season while fellow defensive end Mike Culbreath has four. Offenses can score quickly through the air and if West Chester can prevent that attack, opponents have a more difficult time in getting down the field. This pass defense coupled with the Golden Ram offense has led to a 22 point average scoring margin which is tops in the conference.

Reader Question - Playoff Seed

Q - A lot of questions have been coming in regarding why the Golden Rams were seeded fourth when the playoff field was announced earlier this evening.

A - The first thing to clear up is week to week "movement" in the rankings. Several have asked how West Chester could drop a notch in the rankings even though they defeated Indiana on Saturday. The short answer is that relative movement within the rankings are not considered. Each week, the information is evaluated with a fresh eye with no regard to the previous week's ranking.

Now as to why West Chester ended with the fourth seed despite having a better record than Virginia St. The answer is that Virginia St has a much better strength of schedule than West Chester. For the purposes of simplicity, let's evaluate each team's opponent's records in lieu of strength of schedule which also considers a team's opponent's opponent's record. The Trojans opponents are a combined 58-54 while West Chester's are only 53-68. But here's the confusing part. Slippery Rock's opponents are a combined 60-59, not much worse than Virginia St's and significantly better than West Chester's. So the real question may be why was Virginia St seeded ahead of West Chester, but Slippery Rock seeded behind them? There seems to be an element of inconsistency in how the strength of schedule was applied.

As to LIU Post qualifying instead of American International, this is significant only to those two teams. Many may sight the head-to-head outcome and the score of Saturday's Northeast-10 championship game, but game scores are not considered (and likely not even known) and keep in mind that American International defeated LIU Post earlier in the season, so the head-to-head result is even. The two teams have similar schedule strengths as well. There likely is some rational reason why LIU Post was chosen instead of American International (perhaps rewarding the team that played eleven Division II games over the team that only played ten?), but the net result is the same - a Northeast-10 school is in the playoffs as the sixth seed and was likely placed there due to earned access.

For West Chester, it still means a home game this Saturday. There are a couple of downsides, however. First Slippery Rock, a fifth seed, poses a more difficult challenge than LIU Post, a sixth seed and a team that lost to East Stroudsburg. And if one were to look a couple of weeks in the future, the only way that West Chester can play at Farrell Stadium again is if LIU Post wins in both Ettrick, Va on Saturday as well as in Bloomsburg next week. So for now, it's time for the Golden Rams to focus on the PSAC champions Rock.

Teams News - Golden Rams Playoff Bound!!!!

For the second consecutive season, the West Chester Golden Rams will be participating in postseason play when, as the #4 seed, they host Slippery Rock on Saturday at noon. The NCAA announced the 2014 Division II football playoff field and Super Region I shapes up as follows:
  1. Concord
  2. Bloomsburg
  3. Virginia St
  4. West Chester
  5. Slippery Rock
  6. LIU Post
Concord will have a bye and will host the winner of the West Chester-Slippery Rock matchup on Saturday November 29. Bloomsburg will also have a first round bye and will host the winner of the Virginia St-LIU Post contest.

West Chester finished the regular season with a 10-1 record for the second straight season. Last year as the third seed, the Golden Rams won Super Region I to advance to the national semi-finals where they fell to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Player News - Monk Honored as PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week

For the second consecutive week, junior running back Brandon Monk has been named PSAC Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week. Monk scored three touchdowns in West Chester's 28-17 win at Indiana. He had 79 yards and one touchdown rushing, two catches for 22 yards and one touchdown receiving and an 80 yard punt return for touchdown. Including his 19-yard kickoff return, Monk amassed 200 all-purpose yards in the game which clinched a playoff berth for the Golden Rams for the second consecutive season. Monk was also identified as one of Beyond Sports Network's athletes of the week .

Team News - Playoff Possibilities Revisited

With the regular season now complete, it's time to speculate on how the playoffs will shake out, even though the official announcement is only hours away. Saturday could not have gone much better for West Chester.

  • #1 Concord (11-0) - as the only undefeated team in Super Region 1, it's safe to say that the Mountain Lions will be the top seed, will receive a first-round bye, and have secured home field advantage through the quarterfinals.

  • #2 Bloomsburg (10-1) – the Huskies lost at Slippery Rock in the PSAC championship, however they defeated West Chester in week eight and therefore will be the second seed and garner a first-round bye.

  • #3 West Chester (10-1) – after defeating Indiana, the Golden Rams are the only other team with one loss in the region. They will host a first round game at noon this coming Saturday.

  • So that leaves seven teams with two losses vying for the final three playoff spots - American International, California, Gannon, Shepherd, Slippery Rock, Virginia St, and Winston-Salem State. Among them, Slippery Rock, Virginia St and Winston-Salem St have nine wins while the other four only have eight Division II wins. Nine is better than eight, so...

  • #4 Virginia St (9-2) - after defeating Winston-Salem St in the CIAA championship, the Trojans improved their already very good strength of schedule, having played California and Lenoir-Rhyne in non-conference games.

  • #5 Slippery Rock (9-2) – the Rock's win in the PSAC championship game makes them 9-2 and elevates their SOS which is already strong after playing in the PSAC West. Strength of schedule is close between Virginia St and Slippery Rock, with the outcome of the final seeding being home field in the first round on Saturday.

  • #6 Winston-Salem St (9-2) - the Rams are the final 9-2 team in the region and they have the worst strength of schedule among those three teams.

  • So that's it, right? Not so fast!!! There were four teams that finished 8-2 in Super Region 1.

  • #7 California (8-2) - the Vulcans cancelled their game with Gannon due to an event during the week prior in which six members of the California football team were arrested. However, their strength of schedule is very good having played Virginia St in their non-conference game and Bloomsburg in the PSAC crossover.

  • #8 American International (8-2) - the Yellow Jackets lost to FCS Stony Brook to make their overall record 8-3, but they're 8-2 for Division II purposes. Although they got hammered by LIU Post in the Northeast-10 championship game, that game improved their strength of schedule.

  • #9 Shepherd (8-2) - the Rams fell to Concord in what was essentially a Mountain East Conference championship. Shepherd had a bye in week eight, so they ended up only playing ten games. Although their schedule strength is good it's not as good as AIC's.

  • #10 Gannon (8-2) - the Golden Knights were the victim of California's cancellation, although who knows which team would have won the game. Although California officially forfeited, the NCAA recognizes the game as a "no contest", so Gannon played only ten games and has a bad strength of schedule having played Southern Connecticut in their non-conference game and Cheyney in one of their PSAC crossovers. Despite their three losses, LIU Post or Charleston would likely be ranked higher than Gannon due to their respective stronger schedules.

But what this means is that American International will replace Winston-Salem St in the playoff. Why? Because no Northeast-10 team is represented in the top six, but AIC is in the top eight. The NCAA's "earned access" rule stipulates that under these conditions, that conference will be represented in the postseason.

Of course this is all merely speculation. All will be revealed at 5:00 this afternoon.
