Schappell received interest from Syracuse, Richmond and New Hampshire before accepting an offer to Army prior to the 2016 season. This past season, Exeter qualified for the District 3 Class 5A playoffs, falling to eventual state runner-up Harrisburg. With their quarterback back from injury, Schappell hauled in 47 balls for 908 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 219 yards and three scores on 27 carries. He also played basketball for the Eagles, although his senior season was cut short due to an injury.
