Game Report - Bloomsburg 22 - West Chester 15 OT

In a game in which neither team seemed particularly interested to win, Bloomsburg (7-2, 4-1) escaped their final home game of the season with a 22-15 overtime win over visiting West Chester (4-5, 1-4).

West Chester used a dink and dunk passing game and persitent rushing effort to run up and down the field to the tune of 397 yards and 37 minutes in time of possession. Unfortunately, it resulted in just two Tommy Pajic field goals sandwiched around a botched Bloomsburg snap for a safety and a total of eight points.

Meanwhile on the other side of the ball, the Golden Ram defense had their best performance of the season, squelching the Bloomsburg rushing offense to just 67 yards (with 13 of those coming in overtime). The Huskies had three plays - a 23-yard first quarter pass, a 43-yard fourth-quarter pass, and a 34-yard completion - that accounted for almost half of their offense in the game, but unfortunately two of those plays accounted for 15 points as well.

So with 90 seconds left and trailing 15-8, the Golden Rams offense was facing 75 yards to score a touchdown. With this heightened sense of urgency, quarterback Colin O'Sullivan (27 of 41, 318 yards, 1 TD) picked his way down the field, hitting Isaiah Wright (37 yards rushing, 1 catch for 6 yards), Blake Thomas (4 catches, 101 yards), Reese Clark (8 catches, 88 yards), and ultimately Dylan McKenzie (8 catches, 97 yards) to get into the end zone. Rylan Zuk's PAT tied the game at 15.

With 15 seconds left, the Huskies fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Golden Rams recovered at the Bloomsburg 41. But Pajic's 55-yard field goal attempt fell well short and the game went to overtime. While the Golden Ram defense forced a third down, Bloomsburg eventually scored the game-winning touchdown. West Chester's overtime possession was set back with a nine-yard sack on first down, and would never get back to the original line of scrimmage.

The Golden Rams were aggressive on offense early in the game, going for it on fourth down five times (twice successful) in the first three quarters. But late in the game, they seemed to turtle. With just 15 seconds left in regulation, after navigating 75 yards in just 1:15 to score a touchdown, the Bloomsburg defense was reeling. But rather than attempting a game-winning two-point conversion, West Chester fell back on a game-tying PAT and likely overtime. Then after the Huskies fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Golden Rams had the ball at the Bloomsburg 41 with eight seconds and a timeout, and just got done completing four passes to four different receivers. But rather than attempting a pass that could have gained more yards to make a field goal more likely, West Chester got a two-yard running play to force a 55-yard field goal attempt. And midway through the fourth quarter with West Chester holding an 8-7 lead and facing a third-and-19, the Golden Rams surrendered and ran a draw for no yards, setting up a 37 yard punt, 11 yard return, and a short 46 yards for Bloomsburg to score the go ahead touchdown.

As much as West Chester's special teams have improved this season, today wasn't a good day. Two of Pajic's kickoffs sailed out of bounds. After WCU forced a three-and-out on Bloomsburg's first possession, on the ensuing punt, Jayden Trace blocked a Bloomsburg player into Adrien Mosley which caused a muff the Huskies recovered and turned into their first score. And Jack Corrigan's four punts averaged 34 yards in the air, except one bounced and rolled for a total of 51 yards.

Other observations:

• Mic Johnson, West Chester's leading rusher this season, did not have a carry and only appeared on one offensive play, making a two-yard catch.
• Bryan Anderson had a tremendous leaping interception midway through the third quarter which led to Pajic's go ahead 22-yard field goal.
• Bloomsburg took advantage of the absence of starting cornerback Andrew Garwo who was not dressed for the game. He joined the list of unavailable players that included defensive tackle Jack Fry, fullback Mitch Ragni, and defensive lineman Debrick Johnson. Late in the first quarter, quarterback Tyler Douglas took a shot and left the game and and center Connor Tuk exited the contest on the same drive.
• Anthony Aviles, who replaced Tuk at center, got his name in the box score when he caught a deflected pass and advanced it a yard.
• In limited playing time, Solo Bambara registered a 16-yard strip sack which forced a Bloomsbug punt.
• Jamir Reyes, Seamus McCain, and Miles Goodwin were each credited with six tackles.

The Golden Rams (4-4, 1-3) travel to Bloomsburg to take on the Huskies (6-2, 3-1) on Saturday. Kickoff for Bloomsburg's Military Appreciation Day and Senior Day at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium is scheduled for 2:00 pm.

Series History:
West Chester leads the overall series 54-29, and these two schools historically have played big games. They met twice in playoffs - in 2008 and again in 2013 - with both postseason games played in Bloomsburg. The Huskies took the 2008 contest while the Golden Rams won in 2013 en route to the NCAA Division II semi-finals. There was the homecoming debacle in 2011 when West Chester took a 35-0 second quarter lead only to see the Huskies rattle off 55 straight points and steal a 55-42 win. The past eight games have been decided by a total of 20 points, including last year's triple overtime thriller.

Former Bloomsburg All-American linebacker Frank Sheptock is in his sixth season as head coach of his alma mater with a record of 25-38 there.

The Golden Rams squandered a 28-14 fourth quarter lead, but looked to secure a win when Rylan Zuk converted a 34-yard field goal to give West Chester a 31-28 lead with 1:06 left in the game. And after the Huskies navigated 55 yards, their 47-yard, game-tying field goal attempt failed with no time left on the clock which appeared to give WCU the win. But the Golden Rams were flagged for roughing the kicker and Bloomsburg's subsequent 32-yard field goal was true to send the game into overtime. The two teams battled into the third overtime when West Chester converted its two-point attempt while Bloomsburg's attempt failed and the Golden Rams escaped with a 46-44 win.

The Huskies had 31 first downs, including converting on 9 of 13 third down attempts, which led to a three-minute advantage in time of possession. Dylan McKenzie made six catches for 133 yards. On the ground, Future Robertson had 79 yards and a touchdown while Mikhail Johnson had 35 yards and a score. Defensively, linebacker Ricardo Delgado made ten tackles while Ronnell McCorn had four tackles and a sack.

Scouting the Opponent:

Declan Clancy (155 carries, 766 yards, 8 TD's) was All-PSAC East as a freshman last year and as the second best running back in the entire conference, he will surely repeat those accolades this season. Eli Zimmerman (48 carries, 229 yards, 2 TD's) is currently third in the PSAC in all-purpose yards, so besides taking handoffs, you'll see him catching passes, and returning punts and kickoffs. Quarterback Zayd Etheridge (80 of 129, 1,058 yards, 5 TD's 3 int) has the fewest pass attempts among starters in the PSAC, but he looks to Justin Wolfe (27 catches, 414 yards, 4 TD's) near the end zone. Alex Achenbach (30 catches, 307 yards) is listed as a running back but is Bloomsburg's second leading receiver. Xavier Diaz (12 catches, 208 yards, 1 TD) and 6'3 Nick Ryan (10 catches, 145 yards) round out the receiving corps.

Defensively, Bloomsburg's top two tacklers are linebackers Garrett Garcia (59 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 2 int, 3 QBH) and Nahzier Booker (57 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 1 int, 3 QBH). Defensive end Ian Donohue (26 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 13.0 TFL) is a problem up front. Defensive backs Cole Turner (30 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 2 int, 3 PBU) and Zay Pusateri (28 tackles, 7 PBU) patrol the secondary.

Danen Lorusso (18 punts, 34 yd avg, 5 FC, 3 I20) started the season as Bloomsburg's punter, but freshman Cole Richards (12 punts, 40 yd avg, 3 FC, 2 I20, 2 50+) has been more productive over the past three weeks. Peter Kashynski (23 of 24 PAT, 7 of 11 FG, long of 41) has been effective as two of his four field goal misses have come beyond 50 yards. In the return game, Zimmerman (15 yds/return) is second in the PSAC in punt returns and returned a kick 76 yards for a touchdown against Shippensburg.

Analysis:

It's hard to overemphasize the importance of this game for West Chester. Since Duke Greco became head coach of the Golden Rams after the 2023 season, WCU has secured just one win over a team that finished with a winning record per season: a 35-14 win over Shepherd that finished 6-5 in 2024 and a 30-13 win at Bentley that finsihed 7-2 in 2025. With only Shippensburg (3-5) and Gannon (1-7) remaining on West Chester's schedule, Saturday will be the final chance for WCU to get a >.500 win this year.

Prior to the season, the Golden Rams were picked by the coaches to finish fourth in the division. A loss in Bloomsburg would mean that West Chester could finish no better than fifth. While Bloomsburg is 6-2 this year, both losses came in Redman - a 9-6 setback to Edinboro and a 34-0 shutout to East Stroudsburg. More significantly, their two wins were struggles - a 33-27 overtime victory of Gannon (now 1-7) and a 20-14 win over Millersville (0-8) last week in a game that the Marauders had two shots to tie the game in the closing seconds from the Bloomsburg 24. So the Huskies aren't sporting a real home field advantage.

From a scoring and overall offense perspective, these two teams are very similar. The primary difference comes in the running game. While the Huskies aren't as dominant in that area as they have historically been, their running game is still very good while West Chester's rush defense is poor. Expect Bloomsburg to exploit the WCU run defense and set up opportunities for effective play action passes. On the other side of the ball, Bloomsburg's rush defense is second in the PSAC only to Kutztown, so West Chester will likely be looking to throw. But that appraoch comes with its own challenges as the Huskies are among the leaders in the PSAC in interceptions with 10 and sacks with 18.

A Golden Ram victory is attainable, but WCU can't afford turnovers and foolish penalties. Massey Ratings is expecting a 24-21 Husky win while Versus Sports simulates a similar 23-21 Bloomsburg victory.

Game Report - #3/#4 Kutztown 41 - West Chester 14

In a game that unfortunately occured as expected, the #3/#4 Kutztown Golden Bears (8-0, 5-0) overwhelmed the Golden Rams (4-4, 1-3) by a score of 41-14.

Why was the outcome as expected? Let's look back to the pregame analysis:

• "Kutztown has the top defense in the PSAC, allowing just 14 points and 248 yards per game." West Chester scored 14 points and amassed 270 yards of offense.
• "The Golden Bears are second in the country in rushing defense, yielding just 2.2 yards/carry and 59 yards/game." WCU had 40 net yards of rushing and an average of 1.7 yards/carry and that includes Cole Ordway's 8-yard run on the last play of the game.
• "Kutztown's offense puts up 46 points and 430 yards per game." Kutztown scored 41 points (missed a PAT and a 33-yard field goal) and totaled 446 yards of offense.
• "Kutztown has a clock-consuming running game." Kutztown had 281 rushing yards with two players hitting the 100-yard mark in the game.
• "Kutztown has an efficient passing game." Kutztown's starting QB was 11 of 16 for 158 yards and 3 TD's with no pass exceeding 22 yards for an eye-popping 213.6 QB rating!

So pretty much on queue.

On the bright side, Golden Ram quarterback Colin O'Sullivan (32 of 44, 230 yards, 1 TD) had a solid game despite being under heavy pressure most of the game. The offense had two great drives: one to end the second quarter and another to start the third period. For the first scoring drive, after the WCU defense forced a Kutztown three-and-out, the Golden Rams started with the best field position of the day at their own 42. The offense navigated 58 yards in just six plays, capped by an O'Sullian touchdown pass to Adrien Mosley (4 catches, 39 yards, 1 TD) for his first score as a Golden Ram. This narrowed the score to 27-7 with under two minutes remaining in the half, but a good Kutztown kickoff return coupled with a Golden Ram late hit, personal foul penalty gave the home team a short field and they tacked on another touchdown before intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, West Chester went on an 18-play, 8-minute touchdown drive converting four third downs and one fourth down along the way. Fullback Efrain Quiles got his first touch as a Golden Ram as he plowed into the end zone from the one to make the score 34-14, but that would be the last of the scoring for West Chester.

When playing a superior team, the underdog can't afford to make mistakes, yet the Golden Rams committed a few. After falling behind 21-0 early in the second quarter, the Golden Rams lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage at their own 19-yard line. It only took Kutztown two plays to punch it into the end zone to effectively end the game. A later lost WCU fumble didn't cost any points, but two turnovers is too many. And while Kutztown took more penalties than West Chester, the Golden Rams seemed to pick the most inopportune time for committing them. Twice when the Golden Bears were facing third-and-six, the WCU defense jumped offside making it a much more managable third-and-one. West Chester was called for defensive pass interference when Kutztown already had the ball at the WCU 38, there was the previously mentioned personal foul just before halftime which gave KU a scoring opportunity, and A.J. Sanders was flagged for taunting. The lack of discipline is adversely affecting this team.

Notable positives were defensive back Bryan Anderson (4 tackles) who blocked one of Kutztown's PAT kick attempts, and had a key third-down tackle which forced the Golden Bear punt that led to WCU's first touchdown. With starting defensive tackle Jack Fry not dressed, Jahi Curtis (4 tackles, 1 TFL) continues to make the most of his playing time with two solo stops and a tackle for loss. Cornerback Elijah Motley (5 tackles) had a forced fumble that the Golden Bears were fortunate to recover. Offensively, Dylan McKenzie (7 catches, 69 yards) and tight end Ryan Johnston (8 catches, 39 yards) were among the ten players that caught passes for West Chester.

The #3/#4 Kutztown Golden Bears (7-0, 3-0) will celebrate homecoming by welcoming the Golden Rams (4-3, 1-2) in Andre Reed Stadium on Saturday at noon.

Series History:
West Chester leads the overall series 54-15-1, but Kutztown has won five of the last six meetings.

Jim Clements is 111-30 in his 12 seasons as head coach of the Golden Bears and was named PSAC East Coach of the Year after the past three seasons. Under Clements, Kutztown qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs in six of the past seven years that football has been played, including advancing to the NCAA Division II semi-finals in both 2023 and 2025.

This is a matchup of former coaching colleagues as Clements was head coach at Del Val from 2006 to 2013 while current Golden Rams head coach Duke Greco was Del Val's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. After Clements departed Del Val for Kutztown, Greco took over the head coach spot at Del Val for eight seasons where he compiled a record of 82-13. Greco joined West Chester prior to the 2024 season.

The Golden Bears opened a 21-0 first quarter lead and strolled to a 41-7 victory in front of 5,000+ at Tomlinson-Fillippo Field at Farrell Stadium. The Kutztown defense forced two interceptions and held West Chester to just 47 yards rushing. Quarterback Colin O'Sullivan was 22 of 34 for 193 yards and a touchdown while running back Mic Johnson picked up 27 yards on seven carries. Safety Jamir Reyes led the Golden Ram defense with ten tackles.

Scouting the Opponent:

The Golden Bears had 18 All-PSAC players on last season's national semi-finalist team, and 13 of them return in 2026. The offense is led by three-time All-PSAC East and reigning PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year, quarterback Judd Novak (105 of 163, 1,466 yards, 13 TD's, 3 int). His top targets are All-PSAC East wide receiver Noah Kracyla (23 catches, 291 yards, 2 TD's), Shippensburg transfer Jaimen Bryant (17 catches, 321 yards, 4 TD's) and Ty'renne Hynson (15 catches, 241 yards, 1 TD). Blocking are four all-conference players in guard Adam Conklin, tackle Shane Hartman, center CJ Conti and tight end Luke Maxwell. Although All-PSAC East running back Steven Burkhardt (12 carries, 76 yards, 1 TD) has played in just two games, nothing has been lost with fellow all-conference back Jaedyn Stewart (96 carries, 449 yards, 7 TD's) and Craig Miller (44 carries, 421 yards, 5 TD's).

The Kutztown defense tops the PSAC in sacks led by three all-conference linemen - Freddie Retter (17 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 8 QBH), Kyree Butler (15 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 2 QBH, 1 PBU) and Mikey Gray (12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 PBU). All-PSAC East linebacker Eden Johnson (31 tackles, 5.0 TFL, 5 PBU) leads the team in tackles, while all-conference safety Jhaisir Harden (10 tackles, 2 int) and defensive back Trey Lear (15 tackles, 2 int) are among the conference leaders in interceptions.

Freshman kicker Peter Fiorello (41 of 41 PAT, 3 of 4 FG) is third in the PSAC in scoring with 50 points. On his 47 kickoffs, 10 have gone for touchbacks and three have slipped out of bounds. Dakota Campbell (34 yd avg) has only punted 14 times this season. Novak and Retter both appear on the first team on the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List.

Analysis:

Kutztown has the top defense in the PSAC, allowing just 14 points and 248 yards per game. The Golden Bears are second in the country in rushing defense, yielding just 2.2 yards/carry and 59 yards/game. The West Chester offense has only allowed five sacks this season and none over the past five games, so if they can continue that effort and avoid interceptions, passing may be the way to go.

Meanwhile, the Kutztown offense puts up 46 points and 430 yards per game, paced by a clock-consuming running game and an efficient passing game. Stopping the run hasn't been West Chester's strong suit in recent years and it is likely to get exposed in this contest.

Versus Sports simulates a 40-12 Golden Bear victory, and Massey Ratings predicts a similar 38-10 Kutztown win.
