Alumni News - Guskiewicz Continues Concussion Work

Although he never played football for the Golden Rams, one West Chester University alumnus is playing a role with the game of football. Dr. Kevin M. Guskiewicz is the Kenan Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and Director of the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research has focused on the area of sport-related concussion for almost the past 20 years and the 1989 WCU alumnus spoke at his alma mater's 2010 winter commencement. As a member of both the NFL's and players union safety committees, he speaks on the prospects of all NFL teams using accelerometer devices in the 2015 season. These devices could provide valuable information in Guskiewicz's research. In the past few years, several Golden Ram players have had their playing career cut short due to head trauma.

Two days after being released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, former Golden Ram wide receiver Dan DePalma has been named to their practice squad. He is one of four wide receivers on the Riders' practice squad and the only non-Canadian among them. DePalma had signed a free agent contract with the Riders earlier this month. He spent last year on the San Diego Chargers' practice squad after catching seven passes for 70 yards in the preseason. He spent 2012 on the New York Giants practice squad and 2011 in the New York Jets' training camp.

The Riders open the regular season on Sunday, June 29 when they host West Chester alumnus Sam Scott and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a rematch of last year's Grey Cup.

Alumni News - DePalma, Scott Take a Shot at CFL

Two former Golden Rams recently completed preseason training camps with Canadian Football League teams. Dan DePalma, who had spent time with New York Giants, New York Jets and San Diego Chargers of the NFL, was with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Despite being listed second on the depth chart at wide receiver, DePalma failed to register a catch in the preseason and was released on Saturday.

DePalma had signed a free agent contract with the Riders earlier this month. He spent last year on the Chargers' practice squad after catching seven passes for 70 yards in the preseason. He spent 2012 on the Giants practice squad and 2011 in the Jets' training camp.

Meanwhile, Sam Scott finds himself on the one-game injured list of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Scott registered two tackles, two special teams tackles and a sack in the Tiger-Cats' final preseason game on Thursday. In five games last year with Hamilton, Scott notched 16 tackles and a sack. Alumni News - Leo Does It Again

For the second time in six weeks, former Golden Ram kicker Shawn Leo converted a game-winning field goal with seconds left. Back in early May, Leo booted a 28-yard attempt with seven seconds left to give the Trenton Freedom a 33-32 win. Yesterday, he nailed a 30-yarder with five seconds left to give the Freedom a 49-47 win over the Alabama Hammers. The victory clinched the Professional Indoor Football League National Division for Trenton with two regular season games left to play.

"If you do not think we have the best kicker in the league, watch film," Freedom head coach Kevin O'Hanlon said. "As long as his foot is on the turf, it's in his range. Shawn Leo is an asset, he's valuable. How many games without that kicker are W's? He's responsible for a lot of them."

Due to other obligations, Leo didn't travel to Huntsville with the team, but made the trip early Saturday for the evening start. He also converted a pair of Uno's (Kicking through the uprights on a kickoff) in the game which proved to be the margin of victory.

The Freedom host the Georgia Fire this Saturday at the Sun National Bank Center before closing the regular season at American Division champion Nashville on June 28. Trenton will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, July 5, at 7:00 pm against an opponent that has yet to be determined.

Leo continues to lead the PIFL in kick scoring with 7.8 points per game and PAT percentage with 87.2% and is second in the league in field goal percentage at 35.0%. He is the best kicker in West Chester University history and was awarded the Bill Vansant Memorial Special Teams Award the past three years.
