Game Report - West Chester 33 - Clarion 12

Rondell White toted the ball 38 times for 227 yards, Shawn Leo booted four field goals in a game for the second time in his career, and the defense held Clarion to 155 yards in the first three quarters as the Golden Rams romped to a 33-12 victory over the host Golden Eagles (4-7). West Chester (7-4) finished the season with their first winning record since 2009.

The Rams were well motivated to run the ball as White was nearing the single season rushing mark and the Clarion defense leads the conference in sacks. After Brandon Monk opened the contest with a long kickoff return, WCU ran five consecutive times. But on second and goal from the Clarion 8, quarterback Mike Mattei was sacked and his third-down pass, under heavy pressure, fell incomplete. But as he has done all season, Leo provided West Chester a three-point consolation for their trip into the red zone.

Mattei was not as fortunate on West Chester's second possession, as a third and long pass got picked off and returned to midfield. The Ram defense played Clarion's freeze option very well, though, as the Eagles gained only two first downs on their first four possessions. After another Leo field goal, the Rams finally got into the end zone on a great leaping catch by Erick Brundidge on a 26-yard pass from Mattei. After Chris DiValentino forced a Clarion fumble, the Rams needed only 32 yards to extend their lead to 20-0 on a White one-yard touchdown plunge.

Clarion then had their best drive of the first half, aided by a WCU personal foul that kept the drive alive, getting all the way down to the West Chester 18 where it stalled on downs. With only 49 seconds left in the half, the Rams then went to work. Overcoming a offensive holding penalty, Mattei completed passes to Jim Kelly, Brundidge, and 23-yarder to Nick Hall to get West Chester to the Clarion 40 yard line with two seconds left. Coach Bill Zwaan sent on the field goal unit, but Leo's PSAC record setting 57-yard attempt went just wide left and the half ended with the Rams up 20-0.

Clarion opened the second half with a couple of first downs, but Mike Labor forced a fumble on a sack and Anthony McCloskey recovered it and drug tacklers 11 yards to the Clarion 38. The Rams managed to work the ball to the Clarion 9 where they fumbled it right back. On Clarion's possession, the Eagles managed 14 plays, but with such a long field to navigate, the drive eventually stalled and they were forced to punt.

The Rams just couldn't put Clarion away, as their next three possessions ended with a field goal, an interception in the end zone, and another field goal. Trailing 26-0, the Eagles got a 64-yard touchdown pass. Although the outcome was not in question with under six minutes left in the game, the offensive starters remained in the game as there was the matter of a school record. White scampered 11 yards and then 22 yards to reach a season total 1,548, a new West Chester single season record. With that, the entire offense was replaced and the final five minutes played out with each team getting an additional touchdown.

Notes - Freshman Andrew Cohen had five total tackles, including two sacks...Bob Sabol registered three pass breakups and two tackles...R-Fr Brandon Pepper also tallied two pass breakups and a tackle...R-Fr Teon Lee had four tackles and a sack...Kelly led all receivers in the game with ten catches for 77 yards...Sean Beahan had two catches in his final game...White add three catches for 27 yards for a total of 254 all-purpose yards...West Chester did not punt in the game...Nate Pagan returned three punts for 44 yards...the Golden Rams may have underestimated Clarion's defense as besides the two interceptions, Mattei was sacked twice and hurried twice...West Chester held a nine minute advantage in time of possession...eight trips to the red zone resulted in two touchdowns, four field goals and two turnovers for the Rams.

Game Preview - Clarion

West Chester (6-4) concludes their 2012 season when it travels to Clarion (4-6) Saturday for a 1:00 pm kickoff at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Eagles' most significant victory, and their only one over a team with a winning record, was a 34-27 comeback win over East Stroudsburg, a team which beat the Golden Rams last month.

Similar to several teams that West Chester has faced (Cheyney, LIU Post, East Stroudsburg), Clarion is led in the air and on the ground by their quarterback Ben Fiscus. The junior captain signal caller is 184-350 (53%) for 2296 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions through the air and 636 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. When he does hand off the ball, it usually goes to Bobby Thomas (124 carries for 534 yards and four touchdowns) or Travis Day (56 carries for 254 yards and three touchdowns). Fiscus' primary receivers are Jon Reid (49 catches for 807 yards and two touchdowns) and Aaron Barlow (38 catches for 424 yards). Six different receivers have touchdown receptions for the Golden Eagles this season.

While West Chester uses three different players for kickoffs, placekicking, and punting, Clarion uses Nathan Conway for all three tasks. While Conway is averaging 48 yards per kickoff and 37 yards per punt, he's had two of his seven field goal attempts and three punts blocked. Cory McNamara handles the kickoff return duties while Andrew Paronish returns punts.

The Golden Ram offensive line will have its hands full with Clarion linemen Julian Howsare who has registered 10.5 sacks, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a blocked kick and Jacob Heintz who has five sacks among his 43 total tackles. Clarion's defense leads the PSAC in sacks. Safety Andrew Paronish has two interceptions and two forced fumbles to accompany his 51 total tackles. The team's leading tacklers are linebackers Brian Palmiere (77 total tackles including 5.5 tackles for loss) and Rocco Yauger (58 total tackles including 6.0 tackles for loss).

Notes - Rondell White has moved up to 9th in the country in rushing with 132 yards per game, 3rd in the country and 1st in the PSAC in all-purpose yards with 195 yards per game, and 8th in the country in scoring with 10.2 points per game...West Chester has cliched its first winning record since 2009...Mike Mattei is 8th in the nation and second in the PSAC in passing efficiency...even after facing the nation's 3rd best rushing team in the nation in Bloomsburg, the Golden Rams still rank 36th in the country in rushing defense...Ronell Williams is 12th in the country in total tackles...the offensive line continues to perform well, allowing only one sack per game which is good for 16th in the nation.

Game Report - Bloomsburg 24 - West Chester 23

Some might say that Rondell White’s fumble on the Husky 12-yard line with four and a half minutes to play cost the Golden Rams the game in their 24-23 loss at Bloomsburg. And it would be hard to argue that they are wrong. However, it’s important to note two things. First, West Chester had other critical mistakes that cost them points, and in a one-point game, every mistake is critical. And secondly, without White’s 211 yards rushing, 94 yards receiving, and two touchdown effort, the Golden Rams wouldn’t have been in the game in the first place.

With a brisk wind at his back, WCU kicker Will Huff booted the opening kickoff out of the end zone and the Huskies started at their own 25. Bloomsburg has one of the most prolific running games and running backs in the country; they have a red-shirt freshman at quarterback; and they were playing into a stiff wind; so there was no doubt what the Huskies were going to do. But knowledge wasn’t enough as Bloomsburg ran nine consecutive times include a 30-yard touchdown run to cap off the 75-yard drive. It appeared it was going to be a long day for the Rams.

However West Chester responded with a good combination of ground and air attack, although even with the wind, completions were short with a lot of yards after the catch. Unfortunately, the drive stalled in the red zone and the Rams settled for a Shawn Leo 35-yard field goal. With that kick, Leo set the career record for field goals made by a West Chester kicker.

Bloomsburg answered right back. Although they threw it a few times, their two completions picked up only 14 yards, and the Husky ground game churned out another touchdown, this time from 31-yards out. The Golden Rams received serve and marched 65 yards in five minutes capped by a White six-yard touchdown run to close the Bloomsburg lead to 14-10. The back-and-forth continued as Bloomsburg consumed over seven minutes to traverse 59 yards. This time, however, the Rams defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing the Huskies to throw twice – incomplete and no gain – and settle for a field goal. Some momentum seemed to be swinging the Rams' way. On West Chester’s next drive, White accounted for 71 of WCU’s 78 yards, but despite a second and five from the Bloomsburg 7, West Chester settled for another Leo field goal, this one from 23 yards. The Huskies held a 17-13 halftime lead. In the first half, each team had three possessions and three scores.

The Rams opened the second half with the wind at their back, but managed only one first down. Bloomsburg, working into the wind, predictably rushed the ball four times to get to midfield. But the Huskies completed a 25-yard pass and then a 28-yard one for another touchdown. West Chester quickly found themselves down 24-13.

It was time for White again as he accounted for every yard gained on the drive, which resulted in Leo getting his third field goal of the game. The problem on this drive was that quarterback Mike Mattei completed a touchdown pass to Jim Kelly, but it was called back due to an ineligible receiver downfield. Down 24-13 with the wind soon to be in their faces, the Rams’ defense went to work and forced the first three-and-out of the game. The Bloomsburg punt hit the stiff wind and rolled backwards and the Rams started the possession on the Bloomsburg 41. Rondell White made this possession brief as he went around the left side and scampered 41-yards for the touchdown. However, West Chester elected to merely kick the extra point rather than attempt the two-point conversion. This decision would prove to be fatal.

Bloomsburg moved the ball fairly well on their next possession, even if it did include a converted fake punt. But when the Rams did force the Huskies to punt, they managed to kick it out of bounds at the WCU 1. It’s there that the Rams would start, needing one point over 99 yards into the wind.

Mattei had a couple of ten-yard completions and there was a personal foul penalty called against the Huskies, but it was White who churned out 51 yards on eight carries down to the Bloomsburg 15. It’s then that, after picking up three yards, the ball came out of White’s hands and was pounced on by a Bloomsburg defender. The West Chester defense continued to play well, forcing two more Bloomsburg three-and-outs, the Golden Rams managed only two first downs on their final two possessions.

Ronell Williams leaps to help Shawn Krautzel in a tackle (Photo Chuck Bitner)

So the miscues:
- Five trips to the redzone that resulted in one touchdown, three field goals and a turnover. While it’s great to have a kicker of Leo’s ability, if any one of those field goals was a touchdown, the result of the game is different.
- A touchdown was called back due to a penalty.
- A decision to attempt a two-point conversion with very little downside if it failed, was not chosen.

Notes - Carl Barnes led the West Chester defense with 11 total tackles and a pass breakup…Kayo Bakare registered the only sack of the game…Leo broke John Marotta’s record of 30 field goals set from 1987-1990 on 51 attempts. Leo has only needed 40 attempts to get to 33 made thus far.
