11/02/2013 West Chester 66 - Cheyney 14

The Golden Rams got off to a slow start and Cheyney, moving the ball fairly well, trailed only 10-7 early in the second quarter. But quarterback Andrew Derr, starting for the injured Sean McCartney, got the offense rolling and West Chester scored the next 35 points in route to the big victory at Cheyney. Erick Brundidge had four catches for 104 yards and Eddie Elliott had 132 all purpose yards and a score. Defensive lineman Shaquil Ryder had an interception and Brandon Pepper had two pass breakups to accompany his three tackles.

Scouting the Opponent:
The Wolves haven't won a PSAC game since October of 2010 when they defeated Millersville who finished that season winless. The Cheyney offense has scored 65 points this season while West Chester scored 62 in the game against Millersville. Their passing offense and total offense rank last in the conference. Quarterback Michael Campbell (65-136, 799 yards, 4 TD's 8 interceptions) is a true freshman. His top receiver is Khalif Dandy (43 catches, 572 yards, 3 TD's) who is also Cheyney's leading scorer. The running game that averages 86 yards per contest is led by another true freshman Khalil Rodgers (77 carries, 310 yards, 1 TD). The offensive line has only allowed 20 sacks this season, however the team ranks last in the PSAC in third-down conversion rate, fourth-down conversion rate and first downs per game.

The defense is led by linebacker Isaiah Fleming (91 tackles, 10.6 tackles for loss, 1 interception) who is a two time All-PSAC East performer and leads the conference this season in tackles per game. Strong safety Marvin Morris (45 tackles) is the teams' second leading tackler as a true freshman. Linebacker Joseph Bryant (34 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss) and freshman linebacker Daryll Ellison (30 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss) are among the PSAC leaders in tackles for loss. Cheyney is among the top teams in the conference in interceptions led by defensive backs Jamil Williams (36 tackles, 3 interceptions) and Gary Brown (12 tackles, 2 interceptions).

Look for Eugene Moten to handle punt and kick returns. True freshman punter Brendyn Van Demark has forced 18 fair catches and landed 8 of his 48 punts inside the 20 and has converted four PAT's.

Analysis:
Cheyney's offensive and defensive woes should give West Chester an opportunity to recover from last week's loss and prepare for the final two roads games of the regular season. The Golden Rams got off to a slow start last year against the Wolves and starting fast would go a long way to re-establishing the team's confidence.

Team News - Golden Rams Tumble to #20 in AFCA Poll

After West Chester's 41-10 thumping in Bloomsburg on Saturday, the Golden Rams (7-1, 6-1) fell to #20 in the most recent coaches' poll. Four of the top 15 teams in last week's poll lost this past weekend, all to other ranked opponents. West Chester dropped to #15 in the D2football.com poll.

Quarterback Sean McCartney is now tenth in the country in passing efficiency with a 160.2 rating and the Golden Ram team passing efficiency is fifth at 161.77. Team total offense is 19th with 485 yards per game, 15th in passing with 313 yards per game and 18th in scoring with 39.4 points per game. The offense is ninth in third down conversions at a rate of 50%.

The team defense is 15th in passing efficiency at 97.1 and first in fourth down conversions at 11.1%. Defensive end Andrew Cohen is 19th in the country in sacks with 1.0 sack per game and cornerback Al-Hajj Shabazz is 30th in passes defended with 1.4 per game.

The team is up to 14th in the country in net punting at 37.6 yards per punt, but just like last season, punter Rich Bruno is not listed among the individual leaders as he is just one punt shy of consideration.

West Chester hosts winless Cheyney on Saturday at noon.

Game Report - Bloomsburg 41 - West Chester 10

Over 7,000 people showed up at Redman Stadium to watch the biggest game of this season. Too bad the Golden Ram football team didn’t show up to play in it.

After film study, game planning, and practice, the first several plays of the game are scripted for the West Chester offense. As it has in five of the team’s first seven games this season, this preparation usually results in a score on the Golden Rams’ first possession, including last Saturday’s one-play, 90-yard touchdown pass. In the two games that West Chester didn’t score on their opening drive – Seton Hill and Kutztown – they at least readily moved the ball down the field. Against Bloomsburg, the first play almost went for a pick six the other way. The second play was a Brandon Monk fumble which resulted in a Husky touchdown six plays later. West Chester never recovered.

In the first quarter, West Chester had as many punts as offensive first downs – three. But it’s not like there weren’t opportunities. When a Rich Bruno punt pinned the Huskies at their own 12, the defense gave up a 56-yard run. When the offense did find some success early in the second quarter, as they have so many times this season, they sputtered after a first down inside the ten and settled for a field goal. The defense forced a three-and-out and the offense briskly moved 40 yards only to see the drive end in an interception.

Trailing 24-3 at intermission, any chance for a comeback required a fast start to the second half. Defensive end Andrew Cohen did his part by registering a third down sack at the Bloomsburg four yard line. An 18-yard punt gave the Golden Rams the ball at the Bloomsburg 22! Rather than throwing into the end zone, the offense picked up three yards on two short runs and an incomplete pass on a would be touchdown to Erick Brundidge. Desperately needing a touchdown, West Chester elected a 38-yard field goal attempt which was hooked wide left. There would be no comeback in this game.

The Huskies then dutifully marched down the field, 79 yards in eight plays, ending on a 21-yard touchdown pass when Blaise Schieler bit on a pump fake. A Sean McCartney sack and fumble led to another Bloomsburg field goal. Late in the third quarter trailing 34-3, West Chester would score their only touchdown on a 22-yard touchdown pass from McCartney to Tim Brown. It would be their only play of more than 20 yards in the game. West Chester had seven players with plays of more than 20 yards in just the first half against Millersville.

The Huskies flubbed the ensuing squib kick giving West Chester the ball at the Bloomsburg 34. But McCartney’s pass attempt to Brown through double coverage was picked off at the one. A three-and-out and a 19-yard punt gave West Chester the ball at the Bloomsburg 26, but McCartney threw an interception on the first play of this possession.

In all, West Chester committed six turnovers including four interceptions from McCartney; he only had three in the previous seven games. The offensive line surrendered five sacks; they only allowed eight in the previous seven games. The defense allowed 454 yards in rushing including six carries of at least 20 yards. It was an all-around team effort

Bright spots? Eddie Elliott used his speed outside to pick up 64 yards on the ground. Other than the missed field goal, special teams had a good day. Bruno and the coverage teams averaged 42 yards per punt and recovered the squib kickoff. Cory Scott had five solo tackles and a total of eight tackles to even Ronell Williams as leaders on defense.

As bad as this game was, it was just that – one game. Coming into Saturday, West Chester needed to win three of their last four to ensure an invitation to the playoffs. That one game of freedom is now gone. It’s not that a 9-2 finish won’t get the Golden Rams into the postseason, it just becomes more uncertain. West Chester will be listed when the first official NCAA regional rankings are released next week, probably fourth or fifth.

Game Preview - Bloomsburg

The #7 Golden Rams (7-0, 6-0) travel to take on the #8 Bloomsburg Huskies (7-0, 6-0) on Saturday. Kickoff at Robert B. Redman Stadium is set for 2:00 pm.

Series History:

West Chester leads the overall series 47-25 and these two schools always seem to play big games. Last year was no exception as the first matchup was for the PSAC East championship and the second meeting was in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. This year is no exception as the winner will likely be the top seed when the initial NCAA regional rankings are released next week and the top team in the next ECAC Lambert Poll.

11/30/2013 West Chester 40 - Bloomsburg 38

The Golden Rams avenged their only loss of the regular season when they defeated the Huskies on a frigid day in Bloomsburg in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Although West Chester never trailed in the contest, the only time fans felt confident was after West Chester recovered the onsides kick with 34 seconds left.

The defensive stars were Ronell Williams with ten tackles and a forced fumble and Brandon Pepper who had five tackles, a forced fumble and an interception which he returned 24 yards. Quarterback Sean McCartney threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns with tight end Tim Brown hauling in five catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Scouting the Opponent:
Bloomsburg isn't putting up huge rushing yardage this season like they have in the past, but it is how they get in the end zone. Eddie Mateo (116 carries, 680 yards, 16 TD's) leads the way with Dai'Shon Munger (80 carries, 371 yards, 2 TD's) providing backup. Quarterback Tim Kelly (23 carries, 143 yards, 1 TD) broke off an 81-yard touchdown run against Millersville. When Kelly throws (66-114, 929 yards, 4 TD's, 4 interceptions), he looks for wide receivers D.J. McFadden (16 catches, 309 yards, 2 TD's), Trent Daniels (12 catches, 174 yards), and Connor Glades (12 catches, 165 yards, 1 TD). Bloomsburg hasn't been using their tight ends in the passing game like they used to.

All-PSAC East Lawrence Elliott leads the conference in punt returns with a 21.4 yard average per return. He also handles kickoff returns as well. Will Wagner has landed 11 of his 31 punts inside the opponent 20 and is third in the conference with a 40.4 yards average per punt. Kicker Braden Drexler is 26 of 30 on PAT's and 6 of 10 on field goals with a long of 39 yards.

Defensively Bloomsburg leads the PSAC in scoring at 14.3 points per game. They're immediately ahead of West Chester in yardage surrendering just 308 yards per contest. Linebackers Justin Shirk (60 tackles, 7.0 sacks) and Garrett Pope (33 tackles, 3 TFL's) clog up the middle. DJ Robinson (20 tackles, 2 interceptions) and Donovan Morris (37 tackles, 3 interceptions) have half of the team's PSAC leading 10 interceptions.

Analysis:
Everyone thinks that Bloomsburg is a ground oriented team, and they’re probably right from the fact that they run twice as often as they pass, 291 to 142. That seemed to be the approach that West Chester took in both games last year against the Huskies, almost daring Kelly to beat them. In the regular season game at Farrell Stadium, he threw for 262 yards to complement their 310 yards on the ground to answer the dare. In West Chester’s win at Redman Stadium, Kelly threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns while the Golden Rams “limited” Bloomsburg to 268 yards on the ground. Those two games were Bloomsburg’s highest passing yardage outputs of 2013. Without Harlon Hill winner Franklyn Quiteh, Bloomsburg’s rushing game is averaging over 110 yards less per game than last year while the Husky pass yardage is only off 30 yards per contest. The bottom line is, the Golden Ram defense should be more weary of Kelly in this game.

California and Shippensburg were the two teams that came closest to defeating the Huskies this season and they both used a balanced offense attack. Fortunately West Chester’s offense is fairly balanced with some favoritism toward the pass which should be beneficial. The Golden Rams have several choices to carry as well as catch the ball and will likely use all of them as usual. The offensive success will probably come down to how well the line performs in opening holes for the running backs and protecting the quarterback.
