Team News - Players Honored at Year End Banquet

The 2012 West Chester University Golden Ram football team was honored at the 47th annual team banquet sponsored by the Golden Ram Football Club this evening at the Concordville Inn in Concordville, PA.

For their performance in each game this past season, the following were selected as the Killinger Players of the Game:

Delaware - Ronell Williams - In Newark, DE, Williams (So., Chester) had nine total tackles including 0.5 tackles for loss. He also intercepted a Delaware pass at the goal line midway through the third quarter to end a 12-play, 67-yard drive to turn the Blue Hens away from the red zone with no points.

Gannon - John O'Donnell - O'Donnell (Sr., West Chester Henderson) had three assisted tackles on the day, but it was his two key interceptions that garnered the safety recognition. His first pick happened on Gannon's first possession of the game and he returned it 48 yards for a touchdown. With West Chester trailing by three points in the fourth quarter and Gannon starting their drive at midfield, O'Donnell got his second interception of the day to set up the game winning Golden Ram touchdown. O'Donnell was named PSAC East and ECAC Division II Defensive Player of the Week.

Millersville - Mike Mattei - In West Chester's 56-14 win over Millersville, Mattei (Sr., Chestnut Hill Academy) was 16-for-20 for 358 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 31 yards. In only two and half quarters of work, Mattei garnered a quarterback rating of 329 and earned PSAC East and ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Kutztown - Jim Kelly - In West Chester's 45-24 win at Kutztown, Kelly (Sr. Lansdale Catholic) had five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. His first quarter 29-yard touchdown reception was the Golden Rams' first points against the Golden Bears since early in the third quarter of the 2010 game. Kelly's other four receptions all resulted in first downs for the Golden Rams.

California - Erik Pratt - Pratt (Sr., Tunkhannock) anchored the line of the team's second best offensive output of the season against the sixth ranked team in the country. The Golden Rams ran for 211 yards on 43 carries and had 289 yards passing for a total of 500 yards of offense while only yielding one sack.

East Stroudsburg - Sean Beahan - In East Stroudsburg, Beahan (Sr. Garden Spot) had the best game of his college career. The co-captain had five catches for 129 yards including a 73-yard touchdown catch on a flea flicker. His other four receptions all resulted in first downs, including three critical ones on West Chester's two fourth-quarter touchdown drives.

LIU Post - Rondell White - White (Jr. West Chester Rustin), was a one-man wrecking crew in West Chester's 41-6 win over LIU Post. White carried the ball 28 times for 167 yards and a touchdown. He also caught six passes for 176 yards a three touchdowns. White's 343 all-purpose yards ranks fourth in West Chester history for a single game. White was named ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week for his accomplishments.

Shippensburg - Mike Culbreath - In just his second collegiate start, Culbreath (So., North Penn), racked up 14 total tackles from his linebacker position. He was also involved in two tackles for loss and broke up two Raider passes.

Cheyney - Jared Bonacquisti - Although Bonacquisti (Jr., Garnet Valley) only had two carries for a total of three yards in the contest, they were very productive as he scored touchdowns on both of them. The other touch for the versatile fullback was a 29-yard first quarter reception.

Bloomsburg - Carl Barnes - Barnes (Sr. William Penn) had five solo tackles, six assisted tackles, and led the Golden Ram defense with 11 total tackles in WCU's one-point loss to the Huskies. The co-captain was also credited with a quarterback hurry and a pass breakup in the contest.

Clarion - Shawn Leo - In West Chester's 33-12 win in the team's season finale at Clarion, Leo (Jr., Souderton) set a personal best of 15 kicking points in the game. He also tied his own school record of four field goals in a game by converting from 40, 32, 45 and 36 yards. Leo's 15 points in the game also pushed his season total to 87, breaking his own school record for kicking points in a season. He narrowly missed a 57-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds of the first half.

The following players were selected by their teammates for their performance for the season:

Muz and Lew Peck Offensive Player of the Year - Mike Mattei - Who could have projected the season that Mike Mattei (Sr., Chestnut Hill Academy) would have? He went from being the backup quarterback in the spring to having one of the best single season performances ever by a West Chester quarterback. After suffering a shoulder injury in his sophomore season, Mattei saw limited action as a receiver last season. In the subsequent spring Sean McCartney was named the starting quarterback for 2012. But McCartney incurred a season ending injury in the opening game at Delaware and Mattei was thrust under center. It would be a position the co-captain would not relinquish for the remainder of the season.

For the season, Mattei was 170 of 285 for 2,552 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passer efficiency rating of 157.95 was good for 11th best in the nation. In the West Chester record book, Mattei's season numbers are in the top ten in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage and passing yards per attempt. Against Millersville, he tied the school record for passing touchdowns in a game with six. For his two and half quarters of work against Millersville, Mattei garnered a quarterback rating of 329 and earned PSAC East and ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Timothy's of West Chester and Len Frederick's Defensive Players of the Year - John O'Donnell and Ronell Williams - Co-captain John O'Donnell (Sr., West Chester Henderson) had the type of year that everyone expected if he maintained his health for the entire season - spectacular. He posted 59 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and two pass breakups.

His penchant for turnovers was bettered only by his ability to directly turn them into points as he scored three touchdowns on the season. He set the tone for West Chester in both the Gannon and California games as he got the Golden Rams on the scoreboard first despite their opponent getting the ball to start the game. Against Gannon, he also snatched a fourth quarter interception to set up the game winning Golden Ram touchdown. For that game, he was named PSAC East and ECAC Division II Defensive Player of the Week. For the season, O'Donnell was named second team All-PSAC East.

Although Ronell Williams (So., Chester) plays in the middle of the field, to opposing teams, it appears as if he plays all over the field. His 119 total tackles was best in the PSAC, 15th best in Division II, and most by a West Chester player since Lee Woodall's 140 in 1993. Williams also had three interceptions, 7.0 tackles for loss, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry. For his 14-tackle effort in West Chester's 41-6 victory over LIU-Post, he was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week.

Williams was named first team All-PSAC East, second team Daktronics Division II All-Super Region 1, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All Super Region 1, AFCA 2012 Division II Coaches' All-American, Associated Press Little All-American, D2Football.com All-American honorable mention and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America honorable mention.

Bill Vansant Memorial Special Teams Award - Shawn Leo - Kicker Shawn Leo (Jr., Souderton) captures this award for the second consecutive year. For the season, Leo was 13 of 15 (86.7%) on field goals and 48 of 49 (98%) on PAT's. His 87 points broke his own team record for kicking points in a season set last year at 80. His 98% PAT conversion rate broke his own school record of 97.2% also set last season. In the Clarion game, Leo tied his own team record of four field goals made in a game with conversions of 40, 32, 45 and 36 yards. He also set the school record for career field goals made with 37, breaking John Marotta's mark of 30 set 1987-90. Leo was named to the 2012 Daktronics Division II All-Super Region 1 second team.

Kelly's Sports Unsung Hero - Jim Kelly - Coming into his senior season, Jim Kelly (Sr., Lansdale Catholic) had logged a total of three catches for 30 yards for the Golden Rams. And with All-PSAC East wide receivers Tim Keyser and LaRonn Lee, along with speedster Erick Brundidge and co-captain Sean Beahan, all returning, Kelly didn't figure to see a lot of time on the field in 2012. The first two games confirmed this notion as Kelly had a total of two catches for 11 yards after playing Delaware and Gannon.

But Lee incurred an injury which kept him out of the Millersville game, and Kelly took full advantage of the playing opportunity. Against the Marauders, Kelly had four catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns and also threw a 24-yard touchdown pass. Also against Millersville, Keyser suffered a season-ending injury, leaving the door wide open for Kelly to get increased playing time for the remainder of the season. And he did not disappoint. For the season, Kelly notched 51 catches, a team best 712 yards and six touchdowns. His three best games came in the team's three biggest games: five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown at Kutztown; eight catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns at California; and seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown against Shippensburg. In his senior year, Kelly took advantage of the opportunity to go from role player to the Golden Rams' best receiver for the season.

Offensive Scout Team in memory of Mark Killinger - Andrew Derr - Andrew Derr (Fr., Upper Dublin) was a four-year starter at quarterback in high school, leading his team into the PIAA District 1 AAAA playoffs in his senior season. Besides numerous all-league and all-area awards, he was the recipient of his school's Mini Maxwell Award in his senior year.

Defensive Scout Team from Dave Williams - Ralph Reeves - Ralph Reeves (Fr., North Penn) played both linebacker and fullback for the Knights who made it to the PIAA AAAA championship game his senior year. Reeves was named to multiple all-state teams and was PFN's AAAA defensive player of the year.

------------------------------------------------------
The following players were selected by the coaches for their efforts this season:

Mark and Julie Drochek Coaches' Award - Carl Barnes - Co-captain Barnes (Sr., William Penn) logged 58 total tackles and always seemed to make big plays at key times. With West Chester trailing Gannon 17-14 in the fourth quarter and the Golden Knights at the West Chester 20-yard line, Barnes intercepted a Gannon third-down pass thwarting a potential scoring drive. Later in that same game, with the Golden Rams holding a 21-17 lead, he ended another Gannon drive by making a fourth-down tackle short of the marker. Against East Stroudsburg, Barnes had a tackle for loss on third down to force a Warrior field goal attempt. And later in that contest, on a third-and-two, Barnes sacked the East Stroudsburg quarterback to force the punt that sparked the Golden Rams comeback in that game. Barnes provided leadership and his presence at safety allowed the rest of the defense to play with increased confidence.

Ted Novak Memorial Coaches' Award - Nick Hall - Although Hall (Jr., Holy Spirit) posted fairly modest numbers for the season, the fact he played at all is a testament to his hard work and dedication to Golden Ram football. Hall suffered a leg injury in a automobile accident in his freshman year that has impeded his opportunities on the field. Despite that, he's continued to practice as hard as any starter. This season, Hall notched two carries for a touchdown and two receptions for 34 yards.

------------------------------------------------------
Rondell White was named both the Golden Ram Football Club Player of the Year and WCU Football Athlete of the Year as chosen by the players. There's little doubt that the Golden Ram offensive game plan revolves around White. He broke the West Chester single season rushing mark with 1,548 yards on the ground. But he also pulled in a team-high 51 catches for an additional 624 yards. Adding in a punt return and kickoff return, and White led the nation in all-purpose yards, averaging 200 yards per game. His 18 total touchdowns led to an average of 9.82 points per game, good for 8th in the country. His four 200-yard rushing games are a school record and they all came on the road against Delaware, California, Bloomsburg and Clarion. White was named first team All-PSAC East, 2012 Daktronics Division II All-Super Region 1 second team, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All Super Region 1, Beyond Sports Network Division II All-American second team, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America second team and D2Football.com All-American honorable mention.

Sean Beahan was named the West Chester Football Scholar Athlete of the Year.

For their contribution and service to WCU football, Len Fredericks presented the Golden Ram Football Club President's Award to Lynn and Mimi Curry. The Curry's were regular attendees and contributors to GRFC meetings and were instrumental in coordinating fundraising activities for WCU football. Lynn is the creator and producer of the Bill Zwaan Football Show. Lynn and Mimi are the parents of tight end Justin Curry (Sr., Oxford) who was named second team All-PSAC at his position.
